NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A United Airlines flight from New Orleans to San Francisco returned to the New Orleans airport within minutes of taking off Monday after rocking back and forth.
Copilot Ronald Lee Young told an Associated Press reporter aboard Flight 497 that he landed on backup systems, with minimal steering and braking ability, after the plane lost all electronics.
He said the plane, heavy with fuel, ran off the runway and blew a tire.
As soon as the flight was on the ground, flight attendants shouted "Leave everything. Get out!" Passengers slid down the front and back slides.
A few passengers walked to an ambulance after a call for anyone with injuries.
The injuries appeared to be minor, such as abrasions from the slide.

NEW ORLEANS—A United flight from New Orleans to San Francisco returned to the New Orleans airport within minutes after takeoff Monday, with light white smoke coming from an engine. The plane was rocking back and forth in windy weather, and never gained much altitude.
As soon as Flight 497 was back on the ground, flight attendants began shouting "Leave everything. Get out! Get out!" An Associated Press reporter aboard the flight said passengers slid down the front and back slides.
There was no announcement, and no interior lights or seat belt announcements were turned on.

Mixed messages, as usual, in early reporting. Wonder what happened?

Copilot Ronald Lee Young told an Associated Press reporter . . .

When will pilots ever learn--never talk to anyone about an incident unless it's your union or your own lawyer. No good thing can come of it.

As much as we bad mouth unions, they've kept a lot of pilots' certificates over the years.

C'mon guys! Haven't you figured out a way to blame SW for this incident yet? You guys are really slipping!

United was asked to maintain 250 to 1 mile out because SWA was behind them. Despite Uniteds emergency they reluctantly agreed since declining would have meant being re-sequenced for the approach. Since SWA throws a monthly party for the approach and tower controllers they know who butters their bread.

Jokes aside I hope everyone got our safely.

There you go! ;)

Hope everyone's OK... Sounds like the crew did a great job.....

The last ECAM page on the Airbus after such an emergency reads

YOU MAY HAVE WON THIS ROUND...

"Clear taunting?" - "CLEAR"

Good job!
