Turbine time for major airlines

Why do major airlines such as Southwest, Delta, and alike require pilot applicants too have PIC turbine time?

Because they can.

Really a loaded question. More than one reason ranging from looking for the most qualified applicants and weeding out the masses to depending on the need for pilots.

When the need goes up the requirements go down. But really the majors don't have to hire below their stated requirements because of the low demand and high supply (no matter what Kitt tells you). You see this more at the commuter/regional level.

As for looking for the best qualified canidate reasons can vary and what makes the perfect newhire is highly subjective and debateable.

Generally though over time the major airlines see the bulk of the successful newhires come onboard with either civ 121 (or 135/crop/fract) turb time (preferance given to TURB 121 PIC) or mil time.

This doesn't mean that someone without the above stated exp. couldn't be a successful pilot at the major level it's just what they (the people hiring at the majors) see as the ideal applicant and what they can require given the demand and supply.

Then, they start asking for how much turbojet time, not just turbine. How about how much time in a turboprop and turbojet over X pounds? Did your turbojet time include swept wing? with or without leading edge devises? Lets not forget about what kind of avionics your turbojet over X pounds, with leading edge devises.

I agree with Lear, its all about HR people getting involved.

Why else would an airline app. want information on how much C-150 time you have at night, above 180, with pro-line 21 avionics.

Alaska requires 1,000 turbin pic, unless you come from the ranks of Horizon Air, then none is required, only that you have 2,000 TT from qx.
