Yeah me too. But the ATR does fine in ice, as long as you are not holding, with flaps and below holding airspeed in severe icing for 20 minutes.
 
If you fly any airplane in severe icing conditions for 20 minutes with your flaps down, below the recommended icing speed, and not turn on the airframe deice for the first 5 minutes... of course it will turn into a lawn dart when you lose it and attempt a 3 G pullout at 125kts above VMO.

Definitely an overblown reputation. Especially, when you consider the mistakes made and the modifications that have been made since.


...and how about the fires then?

ATR is doing a tour of their 72-500 across North America right now. I have a friend helping them out with their Dog and Pony shows. They are planning on meeting with at least 20 airlines in the next 2 weeks. My friend actually likes the aircraft and told me its quieter than the CRJ with the new 6 bladed prop. Huge difference over the current version at ASA. Plus, ATR is trying to ride the momentum of $83 oil and a rash of gear failures on the Dash 8.

If only they had installed a APU for some bleed air while on the ground. Other then that, I think it is a solid airplane..

Plus its 5 million dollars less then the Q400's
 
The ATR is a good airplane and out sold the CRJ this year at Paris. Something between 1/2 and 1/3 the fuel for the same block time while going 150 knots slower with a big cabin and much less restrictive load carrying ability. Around the ASA system the ATR could do most of the flying under 400NM within minutes of the RJ's block and it could take advantage of its short field abilities to take intersection take offs to avoid departure delays out of ATL.

It is a shame the US airlines do nothing to promote these turboprops as "unducted fan jets" or something that makes the passengers like them. After all the ATR spews 1/3rd the pollution of a 50 seat RJ and is more comfortable. It seems the passengers would love them if they understood what the airplane does.

As for the ice. The ATR does just fine. It isn't a jet and can not rely on the SAT / TAT spread - so it does pick up ice. But, the anti icing system is easily up to the task of keeping the airplane clean.
 
The need to redesign the thing and add an apu. It sounds like the ATR people are trying to cut into some of the q400 sales. I think I read that every q400 made in the next 3 years has already been paid for via orders or options. I'm sure the ATR people would like to cut into that with the 72-500

The 212A or ATR-72-500 just hums in flight... very quiet. Headsets are definitely optional. Don't even need to touch the condition (prop) levers outside of start and shutdown. Systems are quite automatic...for a turboprop. APU is definitely a must though. Handles better than a DHC8 too. 3600' strips aren't a problem either. Being half French is it's only weakness ;) Not as fast as the Q400 but it has a proven history.

And from what I hear, Bombardier's quality control leaves a lot to desired.
 
I watched that icing test video of an ATR behind a modified KC135 in dispatch GS at TSA - post-mod the airplane seems to be just a fine bird
