People you don't tip:
Doctor
Lawyer
Accountant
Financial Advisor

People you do tip:
Waiter/busboy
Taxi driver
Doorman
Shoe shiner
Strip club men's room valet

Which list do you want to be on?

I don't think it is appropriate for pilots to accept tips. We are not pizza deliverymen, valets or hotel van drivers. No matter the field, a true Professional does not accept tips. CPA's, Attorneys, Nurses, Doctors, Lawyers ect. ect., don't accept tips and neither should pilots. I have been offered tips several times and have always kindly turned them down with a thank you. Don't accept tips.....it's very tacky and unprofessional. Just my .02

Last I checked, we were HOURLY employees, not salaried. CPA's, attorneys, doctors, lawyers are salaried, and yes, it is not appropriate to tip one of those individuals. Not to start flame bait here, but we do get paid more in accordance with the other group. Yes, we are professionals;last I checked, a 'nail technician' isn't required to go through recurrent groundschool and PC's, or invest $100k plus in their education. You won't get any sympathy from the flying public, however.

What is nessesary is an education program by the unions, pilot groups, etc., and not just from informational picketing prior to a strike. I would like to believe that if the public really knew the truth, they would be horrified.

Oh, sorry, back to reality.

I agree with svcta when he said tipping is out of control, but what the heck, may as well throw it out there to put a smile on someone's face by throwing it out there. I think he was a little harsh with the commie comment though, just goes to show how mature regional guys are I guess.

Very professional "dude!"

You ARE being paid exactly what you are worth. Something about the conditions of long-run competitive equilibrium from econ 101.

Spoken like a gentleman and a scholar.
Hmmmm, 2000 hours.......let's see how you feel in a few years and a few thousand more hours.

I agree 100%, I'll be insulted if somebody offer me a tip.

I'll give you a tip: Don't dry you're cat in the microwave.

Seriously folks, I'm here every Thursday be sure to try the buffet...

If we sit silently and appear to be professional, management is sure to increase our pay! Boo on tipping. I just want to look professional in my pilot suit.

Since we can't convince management that we're professional enough for adequate compensation maybe we can pass our hats around for money, oh but wait....that wouldn't look professional.

Rekks:
Not to nit pick, but most of the attorneys I know bill by the hour, as do some CPAs to be sure.
And did you really spend 100K on your flight training?

Sorry about the commie remark, I didn't mean to harsh out your mellow, you dope smokin' hippie. I'll try to develop a more sensitive method of posting(more sensitive...John Kerry....get it....ahh, it was worth a shot)

By the way, I'm just having a little fun. Nothing to it.

Since it is customary in the US to tip almost everywhere we go, I was comtemplating why we as pilots don't get tips. I mean, people tip cab drivers, who make about twice what we make, so why not us? On your next trip while greeting the passengers, we should all join together in announcing over the PA that tips or any form of gratuity are welcome, since we don't get paid crap!
Great idea, but I have one question: What about us guys who fly the boxes at night, how do we get tipped? On average, there are about 70,000+ packages sitting behind me. If I could get even one dollar per shipping customer in tips after every trip, I can't say I would complain too much.

What about the Flight Attendants who actually have to deal with the toads in the back..... I have been offered tips before

Charter guys flying lears get tips, us guys flying 50 or more around don't. It is like the difference between limo and greyhound.
Pax have handed me plenty of $20s to give to the line guys after loading/unloading all the bags myself. I can't say it is unheard of to be tipped, but it happens a lot less than you would think for charter guys. People just has this idea that we're all rich. I remember talkign to one passengers and his jaw hit the ground when I told him the average salary of a Lear FO.
