You're right Sig. Everyone stay away from California. It's hell on earth. You'll be poor and miserable and probably die young! Don't do it!
 
If you don't mind the cost of admission, go for it. I'd rather keep my money for a better standard of living and retirement in a "less desirable" location. Have lots of friends in CA, go there a lot for work. Would love to live there, but refuse unless the powers that be ever get the house in order. Did the math on it once, and it would cost between $1200-1800 month more for the same standard of living in AZ or FL.

That's some wacky math, Sig. I fly an extra 4 days a year to live in Cali. Probably the same amount most folks fly to pay for heating and AC.
 
If you have a decent accountant the extra taxes you pay for living in Cali will be negligible. If taxes are a huge concern, Reno is a 3 1/2 drive and Incline Village is even closer.
 
live in PA and drive to BWI. Much safer, nicer and cheaper! 500k will put you in a house with land and good schools.
