I think management had to do something with the rumblings of a pilot's union in the formative stages.

I applaud management for stepping up to the plate on this issue. In my opinion it is criminal to require a new pilot to be in SLC at training, give them a SkyWest ID, start their clock for benefits, and receive jumpseat and OO pass privileges while not paying them a dime.

I too applaud management for resuming paying newhires, but I doubt it has anything to do with people grumbling about a union. I don't think they can find enough qualified people to fill their RJ classes who are willing to sacrifice 2.5 months of their lives without a paycheck.

I didn't know that they were having trouble filling classes. Interesting.

The last time they started paying newhires during training was when just about every airline was hiring. It was easy to understand then how they had trouble filling classes. Wonder why they are having trouble now?

Unfortunately, I don't think mgmt is too concerned about ALPA, yet. Hopefully this pilot group shows a little unity this time. As for the 70 rates, I'd be very surprised if they considered splitting the rates. It's too easy for them to offer a token raise for the entire jet fleet and act offended when we ask for higher 70 rates.

I had a new hire in the observing in the jumpseat about a week ago. His new hire jet class had 15 in it when they were expecting 60. They are having a hard time finding people with turbine time for the jet. He said that when he interviewed only 4 of the 12 invited showed up.

Please don't think it was any benevolence of SkyWest management to pay their newhires again. It is strictly business. If you can't find labor willing to work for free you have to pay them.

KUDOS to all you who stayed away from SkyWest because they weren't willing to pay you!!!! SkyWest is a great place to work but I wouldn’t do it for free.

I'm glad they will be reinstating new hire pay (if the rumors are true) It's not much but at least it is something.

Another heads up, also talked to an interveiw captain and said that they are planning on hiring 150 by the end of the year.

Going based strictly on what is known now the two year upgrades will end very soon. There are no more scheduled deliveries after Febuary of 2006 to my knowledge. Things can change but to upgrade in two years you would need the explosive growth to continue at the rate that it has. There will be 2 700s per month til the end of the year then 6 in January 06 and 5 in Feb. 06. After that you are back to waiting for attrition and retirements to upgrade both of which arent that high at all. 2 years ago the upgrade time was probably much different. I guess the bottom line is expect nothing because upgrade time is usually dependant on growth and it looks like the growth is starting to slow down soon. Things can change quickly however such as getting new aircraft or a new code share however that looks highly unlikely at this time.

A few years back they were paying for training. Many of my friends as well as myself would have never showed up to ground school had they not paid us. You've got to be able to pay your bills. This has been an issue for quite a while and I'm glad it has been resolved. It still is not decent pay, but at least it will help a bit.

As far as upgrades go. Don't have a crystal ball but it looks like it will come to a halt 1st quarter of 2006. ORD and DEN are fairly junior. I know of FOs getting a line for their first full month on line.
