Skybus cancels more flights

Wednesday, December 26, 2007 8:02 AM

Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Discount carrier Skybus Airlines canceled ten flights Wednesday because of problems with two of its aircraft, a day after Christmas cancellations left scores of travelers stranded.
A door problem discovered on one plane late Monday was expected to be fixed before Wednesday evening, said Bob Tenenbaum, a Skybus spokesman.
A second plane was undergoing maintenance to repair damage to the fuselage behind the front entry door. The work could be finished by Thursday morning, but if not, further cancellations are likely, Tenenbaum said.
Round trips were scrubbed Wednesday between the company's hometown of Columbus and Milwaukee; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Bellingham, Wash.; Portsmouth, N.H.; and Gulfport, Miss. On Tuesday, Skybus canceled four flights.
Tenenbaum estimated that at least 1,000 passengers were affected by the service disruptions over the two days.
The airline was offering refunds for flights that were canceled and was making efforts to rebook travelers on later Skybus flights. But Skybus was unable to transfer passengers to flights on other airlines because it does not have those agreements with other carriers, Tenenbaum said.
The airline apologized to customers whose Christmas travel plans were ruined.
“This is terribly unfortunate, and the timing also is very unfortunate. I think people get accustomed to travel disruptions, but nobody likes to see them around Christmas,” Tenenbaum said.
Skybus launched service from its Columbus hub May 22, offering some seats for as little as $10 each way, plus taxes and fees.
Last week, it reported a loss of $16 million for the three months that ended Sept. 30.
The Dispatch Printing Company, publisher of The Dispatch, owns a minority stake in Skybus.

OK let's get something straight here. Skybus doesn't go into Seattle or Vancouver, they go to Bellingham. They don't go to Boston, they go to Portsmouth NH. At least they correctly mention "New Orleans" as really being Gulfport/Biloxi MS.

Other Skybus misnomers: What they call San Francisco is really Oakland. What they call Hartford is really Chickopee, MA (WTF??). What they call New York is really Newburgh/Stuart. There are other ones. Am I the only one that finds these intentional misrepresentations annoying? I'd hate to be the little old lady that thinks she's going to LGA and ends up at Stuart with no way to get to the city.

This is exactly what RyanAir does, which resulted in it being sued in the European court. Now it has to say where it's going to, not the closest big name place.
These guys came from there - they're just following the model, until someone sues.

You forgot "What they call an airline is really Skybus."

They aren't the only ones known to do that. Southwest has a billboard just outside the PHX airport touting their nonstop service to DC in big bold letters, when it's really Baltimore/Washington International Airport that they go to and not DCA. At least they 'fess up to it and put that on the billboard. But it's in a much smaller font size and easy to miss as you drive by and read it.

How about Fort Myers, which is really Punta Gorda, or Jacksonville/Daytona Beach FL, which is really St. Augustine???

BTW, this doesn't even belong in the Regionals forum. How about the LCC forum???? Better yet, either the Experimental Forum, or the Aircraft Rental Forum???
