The real story is that they received a wind shear warning at 50 ft and performed a wind shear escape maneuver. A Lufthansa 737 then landed and was asked if they received any wind shear. I kid you not, the krauts said they received multiple reactive wind shear warnings and continued to land...the radio was silent and Emirates diverted.

Someone real creative could probably do a great "Hitler debriefs a crew for landing during a windshear alert" spoof using the clip we all have seen.....That makes total sense and what the more insightful posters surmised on here. It appeared as nothing more than a textbook perfect approach and miss....yet there were still some that thought they needed to criticize, amazing. They probably spend their days off watching cable news thinking they are learning something and have very big watches and very little......
 
and Kwick, you're an idiot dude. In any large jet you simply hold a crab in till you are ready to flare then you straighten out the nose with the rudder and a little opposite aileron. If you think he wasn't using rudder properly from that video you must think the "cross control" method of landing wasn't being used. Well guess what, that works in a Cessna 150, airline pilots don't do that.

It sounds like you have the right idea,
you just have to execute.

If it's within limits, you use the the rudder
and make the landing.

So how did you see from that video that it was in limits and he was wrong to go around? I don't know about you, but for me it's a seat of the pants decision made looking out the window. I'll I saw was he saw something that warranted a go around and did a textbook one. Untill then it looked like a spot on approach.

But you can't successfully argue against something as
clear cut as the use of the rudder,
when the manual excerpt is provided,
and successful Boeing landing videos
are posted.

You're just making excuses for
the mediocrity that seems to be
overtaking this industry.

And if you can't argue against the facts,
then try do discredit the person that holds
a different view than your own.
 
Why would you use rudder when you are performing a windshear escape maneuver. As sugar explained earlier they received a windshear warning, not a caution, a warning mandating a G/A with no config changes until clear. Applying rudder would just degrade performance at a time when max is called for.

Well,we where discussing the use of the rudder in a crosswind landing.

The argument was made that you should just land in a full crab.

The B777 manual excerpt was provided that clearly stated not to
use that technique on a dry runway.

I'll just agree to disagree with some of the previous posters.

We killed a dead horse many times over without any of us having all
the facts.
 
No actually kwick you slammed the pilots ability and questioned their skill. I and sugar have read the report and have info from the QAR including at what height they went around. if they had been applying rudder at that height with no aileron input they would have been off the side of the runway or with aileron input scraping a nacelle. These guys executed a text book procedure for a windshear warning.

If you don't think you called into question their abilities go read posts 5, 30, 34 and 36 again.

Who do you work for and what do they teach you?!?! Windshear warning would warrant a consideration to go-around??? WTF? A reactive wind shear warning, especially considering the existing weather conditions, is an automatic escape maneuver.

When you get a TCAS RA, does your company teach you that you may just consider the TCAS RA maneuver?

You are lecturing Emirates pilots about proper crosswind landing techniques when in fact from 50ft and below the aircraft was performing a wind shear escape maneuver...
 
Based on watching the video it's a normal windshear warning go around. He remained fully configured until the warning goes away...at least that's what it looks like so good job! It looks like it was fun to me! :)
