Florida Man Arrested For Raping 16-Year-Old Girl At Airport

JONESBORO, Ga. -- A commercial pilot, who listed his address in Daytona Beach, has been arrested on charges of raping a 16-year-old girl. Police in Atlanta said Michael Matthews attacked the girl in a stairway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Matthews flies private jets all around the country. He was on his way to begin a trip when police said he raped the teenage girl.
Wednesday morning, the suspect's grandmother said, if the allegations are true, she'd prefer it if he were dead. "I would rather bury him than to go through this, than to have this happen," Barbara Matthews, the suspect's grandmother, said.
Barbara Matthews spent Wednesday morning learning all she could about her grandson Michael, who sits in a Georgia jail accused of raping a 16-year-old girl.
"It's just beyond me, you know? I don't know what to think. I don't know what to think," Barbara said.
Police say the 39-year old private jet pilot was flying through Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport on the way to pick up a plane in Ohio and the 16-year-old alleged victim had been his seatmate on his flight to Atlanta. When they arrived at Hartsfield, investigators said, he somehow got into a restricted stairwell and forced her to have sex.
Now, as airport managers face tough questions about security issues, police are analyzing Matthews' luggage and his pilot's uniform, which they seized to check for DNA evidence.
"I really don't have any kind of comment on this at this time," said an airport official.
As for Matthews' grandmother, she said she's crushed, that he's never been in any kind of trouble like this. But, if it's true, she said he's on his own.
Even though Matthews has Daytona Beach listed as his place of residence, he lives in Panama City. Currently, he's locked up in an Atlanta jail cell.

Unaccompanied minors are 14 and under, I believe, for most airlines. I know my 13 year old niece travels as an unaccompanied when coming to my house.

As stated before, there is a chance that this was a consentual encounter that she thought better of. Kind of hard to force someone into a secured stairwell on C concourse in ATL, especially with all the other passengers on the ramp. If she lied about her age and agreed to it beforehand, then she is as guilty as he is. Of course, I agree 100%, if he did in fact rape her, against her will, then string him up, tomorrow, and i'll bring the rope.

As I posted in the fractionals board, I am totally shocked. When I saw this guys mugshot, I realized he had been through the FBO at CRG where I am a line guy. He was really cool to talk to, offered some good advice. He did seem like a womanizer but I do not want to pass judgement. A pretty funny guy and was usually the center of the conversation. I hope the truth comes out but even if he is proved innocent, his rep is tarnished.

The guy is tarnished for life, as is his family, whether he did it (consensually) or not. I would like to see a pic of the girl b/c some 16 yr olds look like they are 23.
There are too many questions that remain to be answered:
Why did she only speak up to authorities after the fact?
Why didn't she scream or make it known that he was forcing her into this stairwell against her will? There are hundreds of pax in C concourse...she wouldn't have been injured if she had. He would have fled.
IF (a big if at this point) he did this, toss him in the slammer with a banana hammock and let the guys have a go at him, if she is lying about this, then she will never recieve the punishment she deserves for ruining a man's life, reputation, and career (a pax getting on board..."aren't you that guy who raped that girl in Atlanta?!"
