NWA AIRLINK JET SKIDS OFF RUNWAY AT TRAVERSE CITY AIRPORT

A Northwest Airlines Airlink Pinnacale Airline passenger jet skids off the runway at 12:45 a.m. at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City. Northwest flight 4712 originated in Minneapolis. Airport officials say the nose landing gear collapsed and the plane is currently 300 feet off the runway. An airline spokesman says crew members report that the brakes weren't working when the jet landed. 7&4 news has been told there were 50 passengers and 3 crew members there were no injuries. the airport is waiting to hear from the FAA about whether they can move the plane. The Traverse City Airport opened at 6:20 a.m. Thursday. One passenger told 7&4 reporter Bill Froehlich that the plane landed hard, tipped to the side and a wing tip dragged along the runway as the plane slid down the runway to a stop. 7&4 News will follow this story through out the day and have updates on 7&4 News at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts.

Just got into TVC this morning and took a look at this spectacle! Go figure I left the camera in the truck today... guess thats what happens with 600 hour... nvm.

As usual the news people got it wrong. Pinnacle reported in a press release that the crew reported "no braking action". We know what that means but the average news person does not.

Anyone who has flown into TVC knows that it's a short runway with awful weather and a bunch of towers just NW of the field. Why don't we all just relax and wait to find out the cause?

That's what I was thinking. I used to fly Brakillyas in there in a previous life and it was short then.

Used to take a Chieftain in and out of there everyday. Not an airport I'd want to take an RJ into or out of five months out of the year.

Glad to hear everyone is okay.

There used to be a webcam at TVC, but I don't have the link anymore and I can't find it on google. Any WMU students out there have the link?

I won't call 5,379 feet short, But that is the short one. The other is 6,501. Which did they land on?

Just one more reason I refuse to ride on PCL. They have had more accidents and incidents than anyone I know.

Was the captain a GIA wonder, or was the FO fresh out of JetU???

Fire away!

No wonder why most pilot groups have a problem getting the contracts they want! The pilot unity on this board is just overflowing:(

If you kick a man when he's down and you don't even know the cause of the accident at this point, your a real toolbag.

Looks like they rehired the Captain from the MKE accident. At least this time he could not start the engines back up and taxi to the gate!

I bet the Fo was thinking, in all my 200 hours of Flight Simulator flying nothing like this ever happened.

Did the landing gear collaps as a result of the hard landing or was the hard landing the result of the collaps?

I agree about not bashing our fellow pilot in this case. Now if said pilot votes for concessions or takes a job at an alter ego, then carry on with the bashing.

I would like to believe it was equiptment failure, but people do make mistakes.

Actually, I was wondering why Bombardier makes such rotten landing gear that it keeps failing. ASA had one fail in ATL a few years back. Who needs trailing-link gear anyway.

It is not unusual for mainline to do stuff like this up there, but I don't remember everyone saying those pilots are idiots...

Bottom line is we don't know what happened, so take it easy.

The CA is a good pilot, and a good guy, flying with a VERY junior FO.

The Airlines have been pushing the FAA for decades not to give real guidance for braking action/landing requirements because it would result in more delays/CX. They are willing to deal with the fact that every once in a while one will go off. Even killing that little boy in MDW didn't get it done.

Even killing that little boy in MDW didn't get it done.

It did at ASA. We must calculate actual ldg dist for every landing based on the actual wx conditions at the time of landing. We also have to add some extra concrete to make sure we get it right. I believe several other carriers are also doing this.

Carry on.

I heard the FO was on OE fresh out of training...less than a thousand total

Sounds like a great outcome from a bean counter's perspective. Which is- "Any landing that gets the passengers in fewer than two pieces near the terminal is a good one."

Having had an interesting experience at TVC I'll tell yah that they aren't always accurate with the braking action reports even if you get one. Was reported as BA fair to poor and 50 feet wide plowed. Yah, it wasn't the center 50 feet plowed it was the 50 feet right of centerline so I had one main in the snow and one on plowed pavement and the nose gear back and forth through both. I called BA poor and the tower responded with "Roger, fair to poor." I said "NO! Just POOR!!" Yah, I'm "that guy" who closed the airport. So what? I was in a CRJ and it was tense. Had we not planted it right on the TDZ markers we might not have made it by the end of that 6,500ft.

Braking action was reported good last night in TVC at the time of the incident with MU readings of 40 all the way down the runway.
