The DAL uniform is by far(t) the sharpest uniform out there.

sure, if you like looking like you are prince harry flying for the royal navy.

i bet nwa guys will negotiate the db off the property. i can't see them wearing that thing.

no offense intended, but the db looks a little pompous to me. way too formal.

then again, it is better than leather and ipod.

I just wear the g*d d*mn hat. BIG DEAL. The company says so..the regs say so....it doesn't give me spinal problems...so I wear it.

Ummm.... Huh?

Company Regs.
If you want to use your negotiation power for a jacket then do so. I personally would want to keep what DAL has and get something else.

I don't really think it's at the top of the list. I wish that was the biggest fish to fry.

I thought you were suggesting that there's a FAR saying that you have to wear a hat; hence my amusement.

Personally I do think hats look more professional but they are a FOD hazard on the ramp and I always get really hot wearing one in the terminal. Besides, I always thought it was rude to wear a hat indoors, no?

You do not hear Doctors whining about wearing their white lab coats do you? I am sure some hate it, but it is what lets us know he is a Dr, and not a Nurse or Orderly. It goes with the "profession". It is what people expect to see

Ahhhh, the Dr./pilot comparison once again. So what does that make WN pilots who are indistinguishable from the nurses/FAs? Corporate businessjet passengers do not think that hats go with the "profession." In fact most passengers think a pilot wearing a hat indoors while wearing an ill fitting and wrinkled suit with pants 2 inches too short and filthy shoes is unprofessional.

The hat and the uniform are the big issues these days?

FWIW I'll wear a pink furry bunnysuit for more pay and a steady career... ;-)

Cheers
George

No, the point is that it is the accepted/expected attire for an Airline Pilot as a Lab coat is the accepted/expected attire for a Dr.. The corporate gigs are a lot different. You and I know that.

Why are you tying the lab coat to the airline hat as expected attire? It's quickly going the way of the dinosaur. Sure the hat is accepted for an airline pilot, but certainly not expected. That's akin to saying the big mustache is accepted/expected for an ALPA national officer. The lab coat for a doctor is both. You and I know that.

You guys have really seen doctors wearing white lab coats somewhere lately? I've spent some time recently in two different hospitals -- one small town, one big city -- and I didn't see any doctors wearing lab coats. Just normal business casual or scrubs.

Now on TV, that's a different story. Maybe that's what you're referring to. Course, the pilots on TV always wear their hats because that's what central casting assumes all pilots wear.

Really who cares I don't.
I will tell you this. It would take an act of congress to get DAL's flight Ops leadership to get rid of it.

Not buying no hat....

Not wearin' no hat....

Next.

Who gives a hoot about the hat? If they say wear it I'll wear it. I go to work to earn a paycheck and support my family/lifestyle - not make social commentary. Personally I do think the nonsense about hat = professionalism is just that. I'll wear a tux to work if they pay me what they did 5 years ago.

DAL has a lot of good things in their contract, as does NWA. We each have some turds as well. Ditto training, schedule bidding, pay, safety, etc.

I hope we can take the best from both and dump the rest.

My understanding is that the various counterparts from DAL/NWA are meeting actively to accomplish just that.

Crossing my fingers that cool heads prevail over DMC's and we really will have that world beating airline.

Amen. I would like to see some of the stuff you guys have. I am hopeful that it will be a good deal.

Nicely said. I really dont care about the hat one way or the other. I guess I would rather not have it but like others have said, this is a job. I go to work wear what they tell me to wear, fly the plane and go home. That is about that.

Heyas ACL,

A LOT of the good stuff in the NWA contract is the kind of thing you use once every 5 years, but when it comes up, you are DAMN glad it's in there.

Other sections, just as training, and dealing with ASAP and FOQA, keep a tight lid on stupid management tricks and "contract creep".

We are working on getting ASAP back on line. It is a great program, but there was some issues in the fine detail that we needed worked out. It appears to be almost done. It will be a good thing to have that back on line again.

Nu, per our rant a few days ago. Are you hearing anything concerning a trimming of your schedules up at NWA. Rumblings here and there, but I have nothing concrete yet.

Heyas ACL,

No, I personally haven't heard anything.

Any big news will probably be out about cuts for either (or both) sides when DAL management briefs both the DAL and NWA MECs next week on the "new" business plan.

With just about everyone cutting pilots (UAL, CAL etc), our MEC thought it was a good idea to go into "mitigation" mode. Our monthly maxes are still on the high side, so there is room to dial back there, plus we have a "no availability" bid that pays you 55 hours for sitting at home.

Unless you're at SWA, thinking there won't be cuts where you're at might be overly optimistic.

That's because you can't wear your hat while standing in one of those.

I think the trimming of schedules is going to come at the regional level pretty soon for the nwa side. There really hasnt been any reductions yet from our feeders but all other majors have scaled back their regional feed. One good thing is the Schedulers told me last night we were big time short on dc9 fos now, so thats better than being overstaffed as far as your concerns go. The good thing is both sides still have room to wiggle because we both stopped hiring. we shall see
