no 4 year degree.....deal breaker or not?

Hi folks,

I dont have a 4 year degree and im wondering if that would be a deal breaker? I have the equivalent of a 2 year degree in aviation.

I tick the boxes of most airlines except the ones that ask for. Is it an important thing? Is it for insurance? What is the purpose of this requirement? Opinions?

Not a deal breaker, I don't think insurance cares. At my regional I'd guess slightly over half have a 4yr degree. It becomes more important if you want to move to a major carrier IMO.

I have one and I make 22K a year looking at a layoff in a non flying aviation job. What good has it done for me?

It also helps if you want to get out of aviation. They'll be plenty of anecdotal information to the contrary over the next 16 pages -- but do you really want to be part of the segment of the workforce without a bachelor's? Right or wrong, fair or not, it's a strike against you.

What exactly is an equivalent of a 2 year degree in aviation? Did you sleep on couches at a terminals? Or did you practice applying for food stamps? Or did you take a 2 hour class on CRM at a local CC?

Friend of mine at Southwest has NO degree. While that is the exception it is possible.

Fed Ex, Delta, Continental all require a 4 year degree. I think UPS in that group too. While I agree not necessary to be a pilot, it is needed to even get the interview at many good companies. Why would you want to limit your career choices?

I was at the Job Fair in Vegas and during the AirTran presentation the chief pilot specifically said that if you don't have a 4 year degree it hurts quite a bit in their new points system to judge applicants.

whoa, thanks guys. Lots of replies in a short time!

CX880.... My degree Is from a college in Australia. Basically you can either choose to do your Commercial and ATP subjects with other courses thrown in like morse code and basic GA aircraft maintenance. If you choose to do all the other subjects not related to aviation in addition to your licenses it is a 4 year degree.

I chose to go the 2 year route so I could get out and work faster.
