Ia there any way to tell what aircraft assortmentwill be in each recall class?

I would bypass and would wait a few months to go back into an airbus-only class. Don't want the guppy.

I think that Bob Neal is pretty accomodating on the guppy/airbus thing. You can talk to him personally when you get the recall notice. From what I've read, he'll do his best to get you in the aircraft that you desire. It wouldn't require a few months' bypass; more like one class max for fifi.
I also wouldn't worry about domiciles; it looks like there's been quite a bit of jockeying for different domiciles in the latest vacancy bids by recently recalled furloughees. Even looks like DEN would be easy to get.

Thanks for the replies. Here's a couple more questions.

1. My friend got furloughed and went to another Denver based carrier. He got recalled and is going back to United. Do folks think that's a good idea?

2. Are there any reasons to leave a place like FDX to go back to UAL?

1. I'd return to UAL; I think that those animals on the tail are gonna feel the LUV in DEN. Besides, with the way that vacancy bids have been going, he could be in a widebody very quickly (if that's his desire).

2. Always hard to say. Would many have left United in 1999 for any other airline? It's always a crap shoot.

I think all the classes have been a mix of 320's and 300's, but Bob Neil is guy that would know for sure. The 4/3 class is: 2 320 SFO, 5 320 LAX, 5 320 ORD, 5 300 ORD, and 5 300 DCA. I would have prefered fifi also, but I chose the guppy in DC because I've had enough commuting fun to last me for a while. It's going to be nice to drive to work and to be home on reserve again. I'm also hoping that I will have better seniority on the 73. As the senior by-passers return over the next year or so, I'm thinking that most of them will want fifi.

That's the truth. We might know by the time we retire if we made the right choices. I look at this career like it's a marathon not a sprint.

I'm in the 3 April class, but will go on mil leave. I just got a letter tonight from Bob Neil advising me I was awarded a DCA 300. That was nearly my last choice. Coincidently, it's the vacancy bid I was sitting on when I went on mil leave after 9/11. It seems, based on what I'm reading, I should have done better on my award. So: does that mean they didn't consider my BIDREQ that I sent in? Or will they reshuffle the deck next week and allow me to lateral to a 320?
Also, it mentions I have a freeze until April 2009. Being on mil leave, I haven't, nor will I, do the training to incur the freeze. Does that matter, or do I still get stuck with the freeze?

If anyone in the 3 April class wants to work a trade for my DCA 300, please advise. Anything to SFO would be desireable, but I'll take just about anything else to get rid of this DCA 300.

AFAIK, you won't incur the freeze. Watching the vacancy bids, it looks like you want to update your BIDREQ to reflect current desires. I've seen a lot of recently recalled pilots on ML get 767s. If you plan on being on ML for quite a while, I suggest that you put down a widebody or two at your desired base. Since you're wanting SFO, you will likely get a 767 if you stay on ML for more than a few months.
How soon are you planning on returning to UAL?
Since you're on ML, I would assume that your DCA 300 is put back in the hopper to be filled by someone else.

You just found out your award? Call Bob with your questions, he's a good guy and seems very interested in helping us get what we want. But, if you're going on mil leave, I wouln't worry about DCA, you won't be there anyway. You should be able to lateral over to SFO and maybe get a 320 if you don't start training on the 300. How long is your leave? If your out long enough you may be able to hold a widebody.

Thanks. I have an email to Bob sitting in his inbox. I called him, but he's on a trip. I'll let you know what happens.

Huggy,

Are you in the April 3 recall class or were you an April 3, 2000 new hire?

Anyone have the latest info on which new hire class is being recalled?

John
5/00

Don't forget we have had a few LUCKY bubba's that AVOIDED the Guppy and Bus and went straight to the B767.

In their recall class??

I didn't know this had happened yet.

Good News,
Murk

Several guys were in class for the A320 and B737 and held a B767 bid, they were pulled out and sent home to await 767 school.

I think we will see UNFILLED widebody bids by the summer. Not too mention we are still short and hopefully we will up the recall numbers.

Do you recall whether any of those 767's were at SFO?

Someone with Unimatic access could pull up a junior man matrix to see which base has the most junior 76 F/O's. Huggy, you should have a good chance, SFO has always been junior...remember around the this time of year in 2000 the 400 went unfilled in SFO.

Good point. Those 2 guys were both in my newhire class. They originally got 727 FE bids. The same day they finished their 727 FE checkride, they put in the -400 bid, sort of on a lark. Surprise!
I think they did IOE on the 727, then were back at TK. Bottom line, within 6 months of showing up on the property, they were done with with -400 IOE.

We're from the same class, I think, 1/10/00? Hello. Guess you won't be in Chicago on Monday, because of mil leave? Some of "our?" newhire classmates are in the next recall class (3/17), so it won't be a complete reunion.

Anyone know the number to coordinate travel to HQ?

I am in the April 17 recall class. What number did you guys call to set up the travel for the 1st week (2 days in ORD, 3 days in TK)?? Bob Neill told me it was the WE FLY EM number then selecting option 2, option 1 but I may have gotten that wrong. Is there a different WE FLY EM number that starts with 888 or 800 and not 877 prefix like Steve Forte's message? As for 1st Medicals, do any of you know when you need that by? Is it before the 1st day in ORD or the 1st day of your actual aircraft training at TK? Thanks guys!
TJ

I recommend you check with Bob on all of this -- may as well get it from the best source. Do you have his phone # still?

I left a message a few days with Bob

he hasn't gotten back to me. I know he is a very busy dude with all the furloughees he has been dealing with. I plan on calling again Monday morning. Huggy, do you know how it was decided which ones got pulled out of their class to start the 767 class? Was it from putting any 767 down on the wish list before any 320 or 737? I would imagine that all the returning pilots put the widebody fleet down before any of the narrowbody fleet.

I don't have it with me, but it's in the packet they sent you. One of the first sheets, labeled travel request. If you can't find it, PM me and I'll get it for you in the next couple of days. Welcome back.

If someone is returning from furlough to the same aircraft they were last qualified on, i.e. 300, and it's been less than 3 years, then there is not any seat lock. So, someone in that situation could be awarded a 300 in recall class, but get a 767 bid once their back on the property. The bid awards have been coming out monthly. The only equipment, so far, that has gone directly to recallees is the guppy and fifi. Clear as mud? The junior 76 F/O (LAX) is 7577.

...that was the old contract, now it's..............

I have a question for those who have recently returned. During new hire orientation they put on a bit of a dog and pony bit about benefits etc. that wives, significant others etc were able to attend and ask questions. I was wondering if they are doing anything similar for recallees covering the changes. I was single during new hire and didn't hear a single word except for "holy crap! 5488 and I'm #10!!??" I don't figure I'll be anymore attentive this time around and think it might be nice for my new wife to be able to listen........

26NOV00 and hopin for spring.....

No such opportunity for wives this time

I just finished the 1st week and it was a lot of grip and grin with WHQ adn TK guys as well as FOM review of OI, Maint, Dispatch, Navigation. All in all, it was well run and worthwile. Although there are no guarantees in this business, future looks bright for UAL. What suprised me the most were the number of guys that left Frontier to come back to UAL. I think there were about 3 to 5. There was also an America West 757 dude that came back. Good luck and hope to see everyone back soon.

That is surprising. I just had a friend with over 9 years at UAL leave and move on. And I know of two others hired ~1998 that left UAL and the industry all together.
I'm looking forward to the seeing the updated Seniority List when it comes out in July. I'm saving the old one for comparison, and want to see how many senior pilots decided to leave.
