The reason for Delta wanting Northwest and Northwest wanting Delta is simple. It is called economies of scale. The merger is not for 787 slots or a certain hub or to gain or lose a type of aircraft. It is not about Asian or Amsterdam. It is about Economies of Scale. The net result of two merged carriers efficiently running as one larger carrier is a better business model with significant cost savings. Economies of Scale is where 1+1=3.

This must be looked at from a business standpoint and not an operational (pilot) mindset. The perfect example is US Airways. The former two airlines were weak, however the new larger airline is stronger and significantly more profitable. Sure, there have been major merger challenges to streamline the new company but as a whole, both companies are healthier as a result of working as one. The pilot senoirity integration is not going well but planes are still flying and making money.

This thread has been about what each company brings to the table and each side argues that the other side has nothing to give. The reality is that each side will gain tremendously with this merger.
 
Let's hope for the employees it's not 1+1 = 1.5
