The japanese were training there civilian population to fight to the last man, woman and child upon an allied invasion of the homeland. Just to recap an important part of my post, Fuschida a well respected pilot and leader of the attack on pearl harbor by The JAPANESE, said the dropping of the Atomic Bombs were justified. This is a man who had a first hand perspective on the finaticism of the then japenese cultural. The japenese did not surrender, they committed rituilistic suicide. Of all the fighting on Iwo Jima less than 200 prisoners were take and over 15,000 japanese killed, and it was not because we did not take prisoners

The proper way for Hari Kari, slice open the abdomen then slice the throat. If you felt you did your duty then you may commit this inside. But if you felt you failed the emperor then your blood was spilt on the naked earth. This really sounds like people who would sue for peace. They had to have a weapon so grotesque as to shock them into reality they there was no glimmer of hope of fighting. Yet some military commanders refuse to surrender.

This was not a I love you, you love me kind of culture.

Ummmm....If Hitler had not invaded Russia, we would all be eating saubrauten right now. The Nazi's had a "coastal jetbomber" on the drawing boards that could drop a bomb on New York and return to Berlin in the same trip. They had far superior technology in tanks, aircraft, and planning than the U.S. but they made a huge mistake!!!! Japan had the "manpower" for soliders and resistance to any invasion of the empire. Again WWII can be traced back to one maybe two causes...one of the major causes was the Oil embargo against Japan. The Pearl Harbor attacks was against the Embargo Fleet and the Harbor planners weakened the ability of the U.S. to enforce it. Again U.S international policy led to the war with Japan.

I DO understand the historical significance of 9/11 in terms of national security.

"We haven't been attacked" so the Bush administration's plan is working is your reasoning. That's laughable at best.

Look at that Bush quote again, " Either you're with us, or you're with the terrorists." Why can't a country be neither? Why can't a country NOT be with the terrorists, and NOT be with "us." It's arrogance, pure and simple. It's no surprise the USA has become the most arrogant in the world.

And yes, we NEED to care about international support. Look at Pakistan. Musharraf has done a decent job of rounding up terrorists to the best of his abilities. He has dedicated many troops to the western border with Afghanistan. Other US-friendly middle eastern countries (Jordan and UAE as examples) continue to hunt for terrorists as well. We NEED them to continue to do so.

What the hell makes you think that you can do all that yourself with no international support ? If you want to fight and beat terrorism, then we need all the international support we can get.

I agree with you...think about the billions and billions of dollars the Bush administration is giving to Haliburton and others to run the war. What could the US and a responsible administration do with all that money? Hell there are parts of New York and most US cities that need rebuilding, we have schools that have text books that still refer Russia as the Soviet Union in some high schools. Roads in the US are bad, our manufactoring base is leaving to go south, and some of our best men and women are being but in harms way everyday. Just think if we put that money into our schools and "rebuild" the US? The US is failing from the leader in education and new ideas. Put money into alt. fuels like Brazil has and become energy self dependent and you would not even hear from the middle east anymore!!!

I voted for that A$$clown twice and I regret it to this day. I have voted republican every election I could vote in, but I think 2008 may just be my first Dem. box checked!!!! I went from a short haired Regan Republican to a longhaired liberal all in one short Bush term!!!! Way to go RNC!!!!!

Yup, war and oil go together, at least for the last few decades. Which is not to say that Iraq is a war for oil, but if oil were not important for national security, then the whole Middle East would be unimportant to us.

Anyhow, maybe it is time to move past oil. Here is a blurb from the May issue of Aviation International News:

"Jet fuel derived from coal successfully powered a Rolls Royce T63 turboshaft engine recently at Pennsylvania State University. According to a Penn State scientist, tests have shown that the fuel mix can go at least 75% coal and the product meets or exceeds all specifications for JP8 and jet-A and has a higher flash point."

I have also read recently that the military is experimenting with synthetic fuels. The Germans invented synthetic fuels back in the 30s and 40s, but they were not economical at the time.

WWII summary in 2 sentences or less? Nice try, I guess.

WWII was started because of an Oil embargo against Japan and Hitler was just looney. When is this world going to ge the message that oil and war seem to go together?

Let's not forget that it was more of a STEEL embargo against Japan, put in place because the Japanese were engaged in a land invasion of CHINA that was so brutal (mass killings, rapes, torture, etc.) that it put Ghengis Khan to shame . . . and it was in the name of territorial expansion, not OIL.

Oil embargo, steel embargo, it does not matter.....Bush is still a ********************in' idiot.

As the Colbert Report states; is Bush a great president or the greatest president? Its amazing that the neocons still dont get the joke.

You just don't get it do you? Don't you understand that America is the real Evil Empire, and that everything we've ever done was evil? Don't you realize that anyone who takes up arms against the United States is a hero???

A hero to the moonbat left anyway.

Name a nation state other than Japan that has taken up arms against the United States in the last 100 years.

Not everything america has done is evil, but we always point fingers at others while we abuse the same principle. We talk about freedom, but this country has taken freedom from so many people. We talk about democracy, but we support so many dictators if it supports our cause. We talk about human right abuses, but we abuse our own citizens.

Why do you think the rest of the world hates us? Why is it that other democracies dont get attacked...its not because we are freedom loving people; its because we put our noses in other people's business.

How does it feel america to finally get a taste of our own medicince? How does it feel to kill so many civilians? 911 is nothing compared to the atrocities that we have comitted. I dont support terrorism, but i support the fact that so many people are finally waking up and realizing what we have done to others.

peace,

Germany
Italy
Iran
North Korea
Afganistan
The Soviet Union

I think that would be Germany I and Germany II....

America is quickly falling from the top and we continue to allow big business and big business CEO's to run this country we will end up red ink on the bottom line. Bush's big tax cut may save something like $100 a year for those making under 30k while millions and millions to those in the upper tax bracket.

Whatever happened to the middle class in this country? We have the "haves" and the "Have not's" and not much in between. I sometimes wonder what my new little daughter (who I am at home at 1242am on a Saturday nite, oh my how life has changed:p )has to look forward to?

Funny, In my history classes I never remeber the invasions, bombings, or wars against the United States. Did I miss when Germany crossed the Atlantic and attacked the US. When did the Government of Afganistan, North Korea, or Italy attack. Please point these out so I can read up.

Afghanistan allowed a large terrorist organization to freely operate inside its country for years, that attacked the US starting in 93.

North Korea invaded a US ally, and United Nations responded, sending troops from many countries. If you dont want to count people who died in South Korea from DPRK forces, then fine, we will count their attack on the USS Pueblo in international waters.

11 Dec 41 - Italy declares war on US

Germany did send its ships across the atlantic and US sailors did die before we were officially in WW2
