Delta Pilot Puts Uniform Up For Sale at Ebay
http://www.planebusiness.com/subscriber/2005/10/26/images/uniform.jpg

Ebay recently pulled a listing that a Delta Air Lines Captain had placed on the auction site. Up for sale? Captain Wendall Lewis's Captain's uniform. After Lewis saw his monthly pension of $6500 slashed by 73%, he decided to make a statement.

And here was his statement:
AUTHENTIC Delta Air Lines Captain Pilot Uniform This uniform was worn by a dedicated Delta Pilot for many years. Now retired and robbed of part, or all, of promised pension, uniform is now offered for sale to supplement income. Suit is worn and empty but filled with memories and honor. Suit has been across many miles and many experiences. Suit was once filled with pride and service getting thousands of passengers to their destination safely. Suit has been through rain, snow, ice, and wind without a single tear or scratch. Suit once controlled multi-million dollar assets, flown throughout the world, with billions of dollars of liability to the company. Suit has never cost company one (1) cent in accident or injury.
Although the suit is worn and has been discarded by the company, it can be yours. Suit is clean but used. Coat may be soiled from hydraulic fluid or grease as plane was inspected. Shirt may be soiled from mad dashes through the airport in a rush to the next plane in an effort to get back on schedule. Tie may have stains from fast food meals that were hurriedly eaten while at the controls.
Tie comes with your choice of pins, Air Line Pilots Association, Air Force, or Airplane. Pants may show signs of wear from may hours spent strapped into a seat, hip shows some signs of wear from firearm used to protect you and your passengers from harm. Shoes are shiny but worn. Suit comes with choice of Old Delta or New Delta emblems. Many prefer the Old Delta.
Suit is thought by many to have APHRODISIAC qualities, although this cannot be confirmed or denied.
BEWARE putting on this suit can have adverse effects on your life. It can cause you to miss your childrens' birth. It can cause you to miss holiday reunions, family times, and weekends. You may miss your Daughter's prom and your Son's graduation. Your family may think Christmas is not always on December 25th. Your wife will have to learn to be a single parent when you are gone for days. The suit can cause you to miss entire nights of sleep or get up at 3 AM to meet your next schedule. Your neighbors may be jealous of you and think you do not deserve to wear the uniform or be compensated for your work. Originally suit required a four year college degree and an internship of 5-10 years in the military, and another 10-15 years for the fourth stripe. Suit comes with a promise of a pension if you provide years of dedication and service. THE PROMISE MAY BE AS EMPTY AS THE SUIT. Now it can be had for the highest bid. Good Luck bidding.

Bidding started at $1.00. Before Ebay pulled the plug on the auction, Lewis apparently received hundreds of emails from other airline employees.

Saw this on PlaneBusiness

haha...that was great

Probably because he was including the logo or insignia. If we choose to sell a uniform, most companies require it be stripped of those items.

I thought it was tragic. There's a lot of wisdom in his tongue and cheek sales job. We have fallen pretty far, folks. Time to start taking some pride in what we do and stop trying to be the lowest bidder on everyone else's flying.

yeah but he owns it. We have to buy our uniforms and after we own them we can do what ever with them once you dont work there anymore. its no different then selling a Delta tshirt or hat with the DAL logo on it. i think its a good idea maybe sell any old airline stuff you have collected over the years alot of people like to collect that stuff. If airlines want a say in what you do with your uniform, then maybe they should buy them for the employees???

Probably the reason it was pulled was because it is a crewmember uniform!??? I know that if one wanted a uniform to help them perform, say, a terrorist act one could get it. Regardless, Ebay did the right thing in pulling the auction.
It was both funny and sad however.

All pilots who are interested in an airline career should read this- True words to live by, given by someone who has experienced it personally!!!!!

I do think it's classic move on his part.;) Very clever.

Sad

Very sad..I hope us pilots would take note. We obviously need to stop being short-sighted with our career decisions. W need unification to prevent this type of madness from happening to us, our collegues, and our young aspiring pilots.

Clearly, our livelyhood is not secure, and we need to be proactive. If not that could be us in 10....15......20...years from now

Peace.

why was it pulled? I am sure he paided for it and owns it 100% not Delta, So why cant he sell it?

This,

I doubt he intended to actually sell the uniform. It was more of a "statement" on the current situation at Delta. Many people have made these impassioned "statements"...and I agree with every one of them.

The problem is: nobody cares whether the employees get hosed or not. Employees are just another part of doing business. You know, like the last box of paperclips...Bic Disposable Employees.

I spent this afternoon at meeting of Delta retirees where GG and his Band of Merry Men pretended to address the concerns of those of us with no voice or influence over the outcome; it was 100% dog-and-pony show. These people couldn't care less about what happens to the employees/retirees and are the emptiest of suits...I don't care what they say to the contrary.

As much as I agree with the uniform salesman's feelings, the game is over. There is no respect for or consideration of any employees, past or current.

Welcome to big business, Kid.

They (Delta Management) haven't given much respect for, or consideration to stockholders, or other investors they made commitments to.

If you thought that was funny or a ha- ha, read it again. It rings true to me. What's happened there (and elsewhere) hurts deep. We (pilots) want to believe in our company, really invest alot of our soul in it. I guess when I get older I'll get over it. The scars will stay.

And the game just took a turn for the worst.

Miles Otoole,

Based on the above statement, you should change your handle to just plain "Tool".

You ain't kiddin' bguy.

Delta just announced that they will file the 1113c since no agreement has been reached.

Miles is right. The seniors did squeeze the goose too hard and too long and now it's payback time. Too bad it's the juniors that get the shaft while the short-sighted seniors intentionally orchestrated the company-killing delay and got the best 3 years of C2K before the meltdown.

That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard. You can buy wings from their memorabilia section or at any aviation specific store. Shirts and epaulets from Sporty's or numerous other outlets.

Why do people think polyester pants and a taxi cab drivers hat is so special that anyone can't just buy one?

eBay got a call from someone at Delta and they caved.
