[SIZE=-1]31 October 1979; Western Airlines DC10-10; Mexico City, Mexico: The crew inadvertently landed on a closed runway parallel to the active runway. The aircraft struck a large vehicle and crashed. 63 of the 77 passengers and 9 of the 11 crew were killed.

Some DC-10 drivers don't have their days either.

Ever flown into Mexico City?

You're a real class act, flyboy. And your signature tells all. And by the way, jerkoff, I am a Captain, so watch out!

Well, you make it sound like in the airlines you have to rush sometimes....you're just another accident waiting to happen.

Yeah, I was afraid you were a captain, god help us.

Hey genius boy...The 10-9 page that they had was NOT UPDATED for the new taxiways. Jepp had not released an updated page. So shouting out on here that they didn't follow their 10-9 page just makes you look like an idiot. Could they have caught their mistake? Probably, but it wouldn't have been from looking at their airport diagram.

I didn't realize this airport was like DFW. Have you ever flown for an airline that didn't spoon feed you everything? Have you ever flown to Central or South America?

Guys, just ignore this flamebait from Kevdog. He has been banned once or twice before because of some outrageous remarks. It's a shame that someone let him out of the penalty box.

No, but plenty of destinations within Mexico. Is it nice?

It's a very difficult approach if you aren't familiar with it. You can't see the airport (due to a mountain blocking your view) until you turn almost 80 degrees after a NDB to final about 4-5 miles out. Your groundspeed is about 25% faster than normal due to the high altitude. One of the runways is usually closed for MX.

1979 was a great time for CRM. Are you saying that DC10 crash wasn't pilot error and maybe the Spanish speaking controller could have saved the day if they notified the plane they were lined up for the wrong runway in broken English?

Actually, I was banned once for talking about my relationship with Jesus.

Do we as pilots make mistakes? Of course! We aren't perfect and we do a risky job. I just have to think this mistake is comparable to the "I've never been this high, dude" crash a few years ago.

Why don't you kids grow up and knock it off?

Pilots will always make mistakes, but you have to consider everything before pointing the finger at one person.

Pointing the finger at TWO incompetent pilots with ZERO situational awareness is more like it.

Wow, you must feel cool, you flew a 747, come on a web-board and call two people you never met incompetent.

I hope I end up as cool as you are one day.

I'm done with CNN, Fox News, and the likes. I'm getting my news from PBS from now on. This is ridiculous.

Someone else has seen the light. Tired of Mark Karr (sp?), Michael Jackson, Sandra Levi, Natalie Holloway, of statistics about the safety of flying vs driving (or showering) being ignored? Tired of talking heads spewing non-sequitor political bumper-sticker logic at each other?

Try the Newshour on PBS. It sums up the day's events without the entertainment.

If kevdog would have been into LEX, he'd have known that the "26" numbers are actually painted behind the point where an aircraft would have turned.

Also, we get into the wrong airplane all the time, because thats what ramp tells us to get into. The only official way we know which is the correct aircraft is when the release arrives, which may not happen until 5-minutes prior to departure.

The pilots didn't follow the 10-9, didn't realize they turned onto the wrong runway, didn't notice the wrong runway numbers, didn't notice the wrong runway markings, didn't notice there wasn't any runway lighting, and killed a bunch of passengers. Must not have been their day if they knew what they were doing.

Guess you didn't pay attention and hear that the Jepp 10-9 chart did not match what existed on the ground in LEX that day; missed that most of the associated lighting with runway 22 was inop due to recent construction (including distance remaining signage); missed that the runway edge lighting WAS operating for runway 26 that day; you missed that runway 26 is in fact really 150' wide like 22; missed that when you are on runway 22, because of the rise at the center part of the airport, you cannot see the other end of the runway, so it actually looks like a 3500' runway; missed that the controller wasn't watching the aircraft; and you missed that you are an a$$hole for posting such $hit.

Or...check out the evening lineup on Comedy Central. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are the only places I get the news. Get your news AND entertainment while watching two of the funniest guys on TV poke fun at mass media and the Bush administration.

Oh, NPR/BBC get the job done without too much hype too, if you're not in the mood for a laugh.

Wow. I didn't realize what a tough guy you are. Talking smack about one dead guy and another who is in intensive care, fighting for his life?

You are a real man. How's that working out for you?

I guess you missed a lot of people lost their lives because of gross pilot error. The airport should have just been closed that day for all the reasons you posted above.
