Cleared To Airport or VOR?????

Just man up and tell them where ur going " Direct ********************hole VOR, or Direct HickTown Airport" problem solved, now go get drunk
 
A few years ago the FAA started changing the names of the VOR that were not colocated. So Bakersfield became Shafter, Porterville became Tule, Fresno became Clovis, Reno was changed to Mustang, and so on. But in typical FAA fashion they never finished the job.

I believe they changed to different identifiers all the vor/airport pairs that are more than 5nm apart. There are still a large number that are within 5 miles and have the same identifiers. ICT, SGF TUL MGM LIT SPA off the top off my head. If a center controller clears you direct it is your choice. When you check in with approach you might want to clarify it.
