CAL System Bid is out

Kind of torn here. I'm EWR 777 FO but not senior enough to hold it if displaced. So choices are 757 at ~84% currently or 737 at ~58%. I like the 756 flying better I think, but the schedules are pretty bad at that seniority.

Anyone flown both at CAL have any input?
Were you previously trained on the 737 or the 756? The reason I ask is I would bid the one that I have NOT been previously trained on. That way they have to do the long course, and there is a chance that they would not get you to training before the next bid comes out, which will hopefully put you back on the triple.

Was pleasantly surprised that my little base(IAH B756) is actually growing a bit for FO's due t the LGW flying we are getting.

There are no more long courses unless you are a new hire or coming of years of LTD. Once typed at CAL on any Boeing, you are automatically eligible for a shorter Boeing to Boeing course.

I haven't flown either previously. How long is boeing to boeing training (without IOE) around 4-5 weeks?

True, but if you have been through the full course within the last 6 years they will put you through an expedited course. I was furloughed for 3 years off the 737 when I was recalled training was about a week and 1/2 vs. 4 to 5 weeks for the boeing to boeing.

So, the course is much shorter if you have already been typed on the plane by CAL.

245 FO Vacancies




2 CLE and 3 GUM CA vacancies, all other base and fleet CAs are reduced.

777FO: 7 EWR vacancies and 10 reductions in IAH.

737FO: 95 EWR and 88 IAH vacancies. None in CLE, 3 in GUM

757FO: 35 EWR and 27 IAH vacancies.

New hires. Yep. Hiring at least through the end of this spring.
 
Like said above Cal once typed in one of the Boeing aircraft whether its the 777 or 737 Boeing to Boeing is approximately 30 days exactly.
 
just got the phone call yesterday! Christi told me to expect feb 12th class all 737, then today was offered feb 5th class I would be 2nd in class seniority and they will have 3 or 4 756 to give out. I obviously took the upgrade in seniority.

I will be commuting from DFW, what would give me the best commutable schedule and quicker path to IAH? (IAH is drivable if necessary)

By the way I was sitting on the fence on wether to leave my cushy job before the interview but the koolaid was good, not to mention all the CAL folks that cheered me on. I was definately treated well so far.

Anyone know when the seniority projection graph is coming out? Or, is it out and I just can't find it on the flight ops website?
 
Looking on Yahoo finance it appears Continetal and United may be talking if the Northwest and Delta talks come to fruition. How would that affect your hiring at Continental?
 
so CLE has less 737 FO's on the new bid than there are FO's. So that means some get kicked out? That would really suck as my friend just got CLE FINALLY and would now get kicked out before he even got there (feb 1st) Do they just ship him back to EWR?

United Airlines ponders resuming talks

United Airlines is considering a new round of talks to merge with Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL) if its negotiations with another rival, Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) , end without an agreement, people familiar with the company's plans said.
Glenn Tilton, United chief executive, an outspoken proponent of industrywide consolidation, signalled on Friday that the Chicago-based airlines could still strike a deal even if Delta merges with Northwest Airlines (NASDAQ:NWAC) . Delta opened negotiations with both United and Northwest earlier this month, the people said. "Our position has always been that we control our decisions; no one makes them for us," Mr Tilton said on Friday in a message to employees. "The advantage of our situation is that we have choices that we continue to consider with our board."

United and Continental discussed a possible merger a year ago after US Airways made a hostile bid for Delta, which was then under bankruptcy protection, the people said. Those talks cooled after Delta rejected US Airways' advances, but the two sides remained in touch, they said. United and Continental declined to comment.

Record fuel prices, vocal shareholders and the slowing US economy have pressured airlines to pursue deals that help reduce costs, eliminate unprofitable routes and extend their global reach.
Delta may have an easier time winning the approvals of anti-trust regulators and labour leaders in a deal with Northwest, the smaller of the two potential partners.

Richard Anderson, Delta's chief executive, once ran Northwest. Nevertheless United and Continental will probably need to wait for their peers to reach a deal before they sign their own accord; Northwest has the right to block a Continental merger under most conditions. Continental in turn can buy out that so-called golden share for $100 once Northwest reaches an definitive agreement of its own.
 
Why would CAL want Alaska? LAX gates? I would think that UAL would be a better fit to get more international routes, thats where the money is at these days.
 
Even with a merger with United, we would still have to hire for the forseeable future. It will take a while to merge the groups and they are hiring as well so I think hiring on both ends would continue until the furlough. Kidding..... Kind of,,,,

I would bet that a CAL/UAL Merger would cause an immediate halt to the hiring at UAL with a slowdown at CAL.

CAL still has growth planned.. don't believe UAL has any aircraft coming as of yet.

Fences would go up but lets be honest, there would be a reduction in combined aircraft with downsizing and readjustments of schedules.
If such as merger were to happen, I could see the Airbuses at UAL go away at some point in the future. But that may be it.

Honestly, I don't believe these mergers will happen in the long run. Alot of talk to mess with the stock prices. Don't see how Pilot Groups and other employees will figure to merge peacefully and efficiently... Something that will also play a factor when it comes down to the actual merger going through.

No. They are not losing any FOs. The numbers on the system bid are only for active pilots, so the actual number is greater due to pilots on leave of absences (MIL, sick, family, etc.) Cleveland is gaining 2 captains if I remember correctly and 0 change in FOs. Although the next system bid will probably increase both CAs and FOs in CLE with the anticipated extra CLE 737 service forecast for the middle of '09. He could get shipped back to EWR though if a lot of more senior people get displaced back to CLE 737 FO and bump him out.

I think the Airbus stays. UAL has already talked of parking the older 737's if gas stays high and Cal is already selling theirs off.
 
All of CAL's -300's and -500's are being replaced with new -800 and -900ER's as well as more aircraft coming in than going out.
 
Obviously, all would be conjecture, but what kind of integration of seniority lists do you see with a merger of the two airlines?
 
It would be percent in company on each side. Furloughs would not count as time on property with the whole "career expectations". Since they were gone, their expectations were less. It'll almost go straight to arbitrator. Hopefully everyone can be mature about it, allowing everyone to take a little pinch, and not try to throw SHIIt like calfo.
 
Pure % based with at least 5-10 year fences around bases and equipment. If you are 50% with your current company then you will be 50% on the combined list but fenced into your airlines fleet and bases. Lets try to keep this civil.
