Mark Ellingham, founder of the Rough Guides and the man who encouraged a generation of travellers to pack a rucksack and explore the world, has compared the damage done by tourism to the impact of the tobacco industry.
Ellingham now says travelling is so environmentally destructive that there is no such thing as a genuinely ethical holiday. He wants the industry to educate travellers about the damage their holidays do to the environment. The development he regrets most is the public's appetite for what he calls 'binge-flying'.

Uh, OK.

I get a big chuckle over this whole "Global Warming" hysteria. . . . . here's some other hysterias that I can recall or have read about:

1) The "Population Bomb". . . . in the 70's, it was thought that overpopulation was right around the corner. By now, we should all be dead, or living a "Mad Max" existence.

2) Nuclear Winter . . . . in the 1980's, instead of celebrating the death of Disco, and the end to the leisure suit, people worried about a nuclear fall-out-induced barren, meaningless existence.

3) The "Great Depression of 1990" . . . . remember ol' Ravi was so certain that you should "Sell everything, get out of stocks NOW! There's a huge Depression coming, one the at will make the 1929 crash look tame!" . . . looks to me like the Stock Market has more than quadrupled since then.

4) The Red Scare of the 1950's . . . . Joe McCarthy, and there's a Communist hiding under every bed.

5) Of course, this board's favorite: "Spikey-haired-back-pack-touting-Oakley-wearing-FO's-cheered-on-by-the-hatless-are ruining the profession".

Feel free to add your own.

.
Anyone else care to add their own?

8) The whole y2k computer crisis.

People prepaired for that thing for years and built bomb shelters and stuff. I laughed my arse off when nothing happened.

OK, I will bite on this one. Explain how Global Warming is hysteria? There is conclusive scientific data by reputable scientist throughout the world that this is currently happening as you get your chuckles. While your at it please let us know how your feeling about DRONES in Commercial Aviation. This should be GOOD.

I agree that it is hysteria. There are two issues here.

1. The earth is warming. There is some scientific data that would show that the earth has warmed slightly less than 1 deg C over the last 100 years.

2. Man caused it to get warmer.

It is the jump from 1 to 2 that I think is the hysteria. The computer models used to project all the future warming don't include things like cloud cover(because we can't predict cloud formations, because we don't understand them), don't include precipitation (because we don't have any idea how much precipitation falls on any given day), or any number of things that have a tremendous impact on climate. By the way, wasn't there an ice age before the industrial revolution? Didn't the earth get significantly warmer after that? I am just saying that there is some historical evidence for significant climate change outside of man's impact.

Binge Flying?

I thought you were talking about those JetBlue guys trying to fly more than 8 hrs a day. Now that's binge flying.

Some pompous washed up ( and sore loser) windbag former politician makes a movie and suddenly global warming is a FACT!

Global Warming is a fact if you are: brillant, progressive, open-minded and have a greater understanding of how the world works and the science behind it.

Global Warming is fiction if you are: the stereotypical know-it-all pilot who thinks he is smarter than people who have spent their lives studying and learning. Yea like that guy that said the ozone hole was fake.....

Well the ozone hole was real caused by CFCs and with the world wide ban on CFCs enacted guess what....The hole disappeared and we don't have to worry about going outside with sunblock 4000 on.

Plus as Pilots we need to get on board with this just think if people slowly are forced to drive 50 mpg cars the price of oil will decrease and we will be able to ask for a RAISE!!!!!

Come back and talk to me in 5 years, kid. You'll look pretty foolish.

11. Global cooling.

Google global cooling and see what you find. These same type of scientist from the 1940-1970's were so worried about the rate that the globe was cooling that some of the extreme ideas were to spread ash on the north pole. We would have been royally screwed now huh?

Oh Global warming is not possible because of a few crazy 1940s era global cooling folks. I fail to see the logic in this.. keep flying that duchess kido.

Webb your right in five year not much will have happened. Katrina's and other natural disasters have very little to do with global warming they are most likely caused from WX patters associated with El ninos etc. Global warming is not causing the catastrophes that the news channels love to glorify - GLobal Warming is a very slow and methodical process - it is chipping away at nature which will inturn chip away at us. If you don't understand the implications of losing much of the plankton in the world's ocean because of a 2 degree drop in mean temperature then you are a right fool.

I want to keep our standard of living and become richer. We need to find better ways to produce even more power than we are now. We need to become extremly effiecent by investing in and using renewals as opposed to conservation.

The great state of Minnesota is investing Billions in wind turbines and will supply over a quarter of the states power from them by the year 2022.... at first it will be more expensive about 25 percent compared to coal but after some time approx 10 years they will be the same price and from then on become cheaper. NOW THATS SMART. But then thats why we have highest level of longevity and lowest unemployment with highest per capita income. Our taxes suck but I love breathing the clean air and riding the light rail to work.

What is the great benefit of emitting tons of carbon into the atmosphere that all of you are so willing to fight for your right to do it? I won't argue the science behind global warming-I know i'm no climatologist. But i will say that it defies my common sense that polluting so much will do nothing. It's also common sense to me that when in doubt, the cleaner way wins. Why not?

None of the scientists are confused. My sister is an environmental engineer. Now how do you think i'd feel if she tried to tell me about aviation. At some point you have to trust the experts who work and study this every day for their job.

Unless of course you're the type that loves all those reports on CNN and Fox news every time there's a plane crash. What's foolish is people who act like experts when they aren't.

You fail to see my logic and attack me because I fly a duchess? I must be a freaking retard because i don't have 6000 hours like you. All those hours flying made you sooo much smarter than me on a completely different subject.

If you fail to see my logic let me explain it to you although you are so much smarter than me and should already know it.

1. The original post asked about things people were worried about that never came to be. Since global warming was mentioned I thought I would mention something in the past exactly opposite to it.

2. I'm saying slow down. Look at all of the evidence. When is the last time you heard a report on national t.v. with a scientist who refuted global warming. You won't because the media loves doom and gloom. This stuff is shoved down our throats 24-7 with no discussion at all. (Until recently)

3. (Not related to the original post per say) We can fight about global warming all we want but one thing we would probably agree on would be to get off of foreign oil owned by everyone who hates us in the world. Drilling in our own country now while exploring alternative with set goals of 10 to 20 years out to be independent is not unreasonable.

Attack and discuss ideas not flight hours.

edit: just read waves post after mine and agree there is no draw back to being clean

If the activities of man are the sole cause of the average temperature rise of the Earth, why is the average temperature of Mars also rising?

Gee.....must be the Sun. The thing that warms the planet. Could it be that big bright thing causing Global Warming. A whole degree over 100 years. Wait, can't be because Katie Couric said it was mankind. Many scientists believe the Sun is the cause of "Global Warming", not binge flying. Also, to respond to one on the 1st page about CFC's, did you know that one volcanic eruption produces more "CFC's" than we all could in a life time.

Back to topic, kind of, I like the Mars comparison, very true and well said.

Here's the problem with all those tree huggers that say they want alternative energy:
Nuclear. Oh, no, not in my back yard.
Wind Turbines: not in my backyard, ugly, they kill birds
Solar: Ugly, too expensive

Every solution gets knocked down to the point where we have no other choice but to keep using oil and coal.
So, tree huggers, what are your solutions????????

"tree huggers"

You should talk to a european. Overall they view environmental concerns as a challenge. We talk in immature sound bites. But i'll be the first to say there are uneducated hippie types that do more damage than good to real environmental issues.

Solutions:

Necessity is the mother of invention. If we believe the media and conventional wisdom of FoxNews, we'll never believe it's necessary to change. Money and energy will never be invested. Since the energy crisis in california- solar has received new attention - and $$-- You should see the advancements that are happening. It really is moving in the right direction. Who doesn't want wind turbines? I like em... Got a few in my 'backyard'

Why so angry though? You're the one arguing for fossils... I should be pissed at you.

I agree that there is global warming to the tune of 1 deg c over a 100 years. As I stated before, making the jump to the conclusion that man caused it is what makes me wary of the hysteria. I mentioned the last ice age, and that it warmed up afterward, which makes me think that we may be a little arrogant about our impact on the climate. I am skeptical about a theory that says when it is really cold or really hot it is because of global warming. Or if there is more rain, or more droughts, it is because of global warming. I am skeptical of a theory that seems to think that a few degree change over a long period of time ( a hundred years or more) is going to bring catastrophy. The history of Earth is one of violent changes, and wide variation in climate. Somehow life continues.

That in no way means that I support more coal burning power, or think that we should be wasteful. I simply think that the CONCLUSION that man is to blame for the 1 deg c change over the last 100 years is myopic with regard to the history of earth.

It's not the change-- it's the rate of change that is much different than the rest of history. It's the correlations to changes in man's activities that is causing all of this.

You are right though-- the earth will be alright- but how will we be? While you're not sure++ there is that study in the movie that i'm sure none of you watched- In the media- 50% of the articles show that global warming is in doubt- .... In peer reviewed scientific journals- 100% show no doubt that man is causing a global warming at a rate that is unprecedented.

Like i said- I'm no scientist. But i'll not be so arrogant as to listen to the media instead of the experts.

Well duchess boy you are right I am smarter than you but I have 8000 hours now so that makes me even wiser.

Look Kido no offense. I'm sorry your thin skinned - the personal attack was uncalled for(I admit) however, I think the point is we need to change our behavior - no we don't have to do it overnight we have the next 20 years to get busy so don't worry about it going too "fast" I want to keep flying and I am sure we will. Don't fall for the Fear mongering this is a problem that when tackled will actually strength us as a world.

In any event the Global warming debate , unless you are a brillant blue collar worker who has loads of experience such as us blue collar pilots, is over. Let's let the experts work this out no one likes an arm chair quarterback.

Go back to sponging off your parents for your over priced education. Darn another personal attack. Sorry man.

I think my case is strengthed by some of the foolish responses that are coming back except for the wave man and a few others.

Max Powers,

You are rigth, we have some time to work on the issue, but the problem is, that the powers that be, try to shove it under the rug. Bush and his advisers doesn't believe it is happeneing, the bloviator Kennedy fights againts a windfarm in his "backyard."

Back in the 70's, when the western world was held hostage by OPEC, we talked about making changes, for purely economic issues, but we did not and once again, in a lesser or worse way perhaps, depending on your point of view, we are once again being held over barrel.

This time, we should work on a real change, not only would it reducing our dependence on energy from the Middle East, it might actually be good for the enviroment.

Want to see what happens when enviromental concerns are thrown out the window and only profits matter, then take a look at China! It is not a pretty picture in their industrial centers.

Global warming is happening, we may not be sure as to why, but indications certainly are, that man has something to do with it. Should we acknowledge this in a meaningful way or do we go about bussiness as usual?

Well put, Bobby B. . . . . and Max, your statement that "the debate over global warming is over" indicates how much you still need to learn . . . . about the subject, and about life.

I am sure I am not smarter than you just more experienced. And until you have the experience your just another Einstein without a clue.

So go work on your theory as the rest of us make a living knowing what we are doing. And when you get enough experience to have a clue make sure you tell all your captains your a Riddle graduate and who your daddy is as you will really gain the captains respect. And don't forget to tell him about Flight Team.

Why is that TY? You love to tell me I know nothing which is fine but at least back it up. Every well respected article or scientific study I read says GW is a problem. Now if you watch the brillant and smart all knowing Bill O'Riley than perhaps you got a great point I mean that guy thinks GW is not as bad as people make it out to be and he used to be an anchor on Current Affair. WOW.

Look find me someone (not senator Inohof) who is reputable and respected who thinks GW is a complete farce and you might have a point. And the guys in Da Tranny's training dept that think CRM is a part on the female body don't count either.
