Anyone have any recommendations for a solid, very affordable watch? No real preferences, something reasonable on the price, though.

Thanks

I'll go with what Metro said; a $30 Timex from WalMart. It'll last forever; I have one that's 10-11 yrs old, still on the original battery.

Strange thing, I 've a had a couple of nicer, fancier watches... that don't last! They break or just quit working, so I keep going back to the reliable old Timex.

I have one. The more expensive type, $6.99. Has a dual time fuction, one of which is set to Zulu. Works great.

Ever heard of the B.W.L.D. theory? :D

Since the plane I fly has a clock in the dash, a clock in the ADF and one in the GPS, I have a Diver's watch...you never know when you might have to go down.

Yeah, and thats why I am not looking for a BIG watch haha. I wanted to know if anyone has a preference on a certain type. I've had a couple instructors give me crap about not wearing a watch all the time, so I need to invest in one and keep it permanently attached to me.

You obviously need a watch, but you definetly do not need to spend $300-$500 on those "aviation" watches! You will not need an E6B on your watch (or an altimeter), nor will you need more than 3 time zones. Also, since you are still a student, it doesn't make too much sense to spend all that money on a watch.

I use a Timex Expedition. Bought it from Walmart. It has 3 time zones, stop clock, and both digital/analog time. I would recommend this one!!

I found the $30 Timex to be particularly useful. It has an analog face to which I set local time. It also has a small digital display, to which I set UTC. Admittedly, I am considering buying a $150 "pilot" watch. However, I'd probably never spend $300 for a watch with an E6B. That's kinda overboard.

Buddy of mine dropped almost $700 dollars on one of those watches. Granted, he's got more money than he knows what to do with, but the price doesn't meet the necessity.

I think I'm going to go with the Expedition or something similar to it. I am looking for really only at least 2 time zones and a timer.

thanks for the info guys.

i got a chase durer pilot watch for my graduation from my parents, but its so nice i feel like i will scratch it up in the plane so i usually just stick with my fossil i've had forever.

I bought the $50 Timex that has an analog face and a digital line for Zulu. Comes in handy when some joker keeps changing the GPS time from zulu to local. I had to have the one with the indigo backlighting. Doubles as a flashlight in a pinch.

Ive got a Pulsar (made by Seiko) pilot watch. It was $250 and I got it for my birthday. It has an E6b on it. Im afraid to scratch it so I only wear it for special occasions.

Casio Pathfinder (or any other Casio like that). It has an altimeter, but I doubt you need that. Having the alarm and a stopwatch are important features for me. My old Casio had a countdown timer, but this one doesn't have it. I wish it did. I believe the USAF is issuing a Casio watch to new pilot training students.

Yeah and those altimeters are inaccurate at hell.

I have one of these. It vibrates, so I can feel the timer. I set the countdown timer for 45 minutes, and it vibrates, so I remember to switch back from the aux tanks. It has 2 time zones, so one is always on zulu. You can also set it so that it lights up when you turn your wrist.

It didn't cost me much, and it has lasted about 4 years. It is the only watch I know of that vibrates, instead of beeps. my ability to hear a beeping watch in a cockpit disappeared a long time ago. Oh, I got the leather band, which is still intact. It was $49 when I bought it, I see that they are up to $59.

There yah go, its a pilot watch forum.

Anybody remember reading that thing in the back of flying about the old pilot who needs a bigger watch???

Oh yeah....my timex with indiglo kicks ass and i got it on special at wallyworld for 15.99.

Isn't the vibration from the engine stuttering enough to wake you up? It is for me.

I wish that was true. I cross many time zones in a week and sometimes forget where am at. I have a Citizens Blue Angles and it's great. The E6B is useless and no altimeter on this one but the time zones are great for my flying.

Ha! Anohter reason to fly a really slow plane for a living! :D

I would flight or duty time out, if I had to cross more than one time zone! I'm such a two time zone looser :(

Really?

No, not really. :)

A scratchproof chrystal is nice since you will scratch it for sure

Thanks

Omega Speedmaster Professional.

I don't wear anything else. Great watch.

yeah, but the idea is to not have the engines stutter, especially if you are final, on the glide scope, at night, in the soup. After that, I set the watch.
