American 80's grounded?

Just got a text message from an 80 FO at AA who just told me that scheduling told him they are going crazy as the 80's were grounded? Any truth to this?

Friend of mine just saw three AA MD80s parked on the side at DCA. Not sure if those are just waiting for today's flights - he thought it was unusual though.

I know Eagle recently held 22 out of 25 CRJ's out of service to prove to the FAA that the paperwork on maintenance was in order, perhaps this is something similar. More fallout perhaps from the SWA rudder inspections......

A quick check of flightaware shows 80's up in the air.....

[/SIZE] [SIZE=-1]Associated Press[/SIZE] FORT WORTH - American Airlines canceled about 200 flights Wednesday so its crews can inspect some wire bundles aboard its MD-80 aircraft.
A statement issued by the Fort Worth-based airline said the need for the new inspections became known during an audit of American by a joint team of federal and company inspectors.
American spokesman Tim Wagner said the inspectors are checking to make sure the wiring is installed and secured exactly according to federal directives. He says the aircraft will be restored to service on a rolling basis throughout the day.
The cancellations affect fewer than 10 percent of American's schedule for Wednesdaysaid. About 50 departures were canceled at American's hubs at Dallas-Fort Worth and Chicago O'Hare international airports.

It wasn't rudder inspections...It was Skin Cracks...Of couse if the SW fleet was grounded the "Haters" would have come out of the woodwork and there would be 75 posts by now...You'll start to see this more and more because Feds are trying to CYA with anytype of inspections.

DURING THE AUDIT OF AMERICAN AIRLINES, A JOINT TEAM OF AA AND FAA INSPECTORS RAISED QUESTIONS REGARDING AN ALREADY ACCOMPLISHED AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE CONCERNING HOW A CERTAIN BUNDLE OF WIRES IS SECURED TO THE MD-80 AIRCRAFT. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF REINSPECTING THE MD-80S TO MAKE SURE THE WIRING IS INSTALLED AND SECURED EXACTLY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE AA DIRECTIVES. BECAUSE THE PROCESS CAN TAKE SEVERAL HOURS TO REINSPECT EACH AIRCRAFT, WE HAVE HAD TO CANCEL APPROXIMATELY 200 FLIGHTS. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED 203 MD-80S LAST NIGHT AND REMOVED 79 OF THESE AIRPLANES FROM SERVICE TO RE-SECURE THE PROTECTIVE SLEEVE AND A WIRING BUNDLE. THESE AIRPLANES ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN SERVICE BY THE END OF THE DAY. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF COMPLETING THE INSPECTIONS ON THE REMAINING AIRPLANES AND WILL RETURN THEM TO SERVICE ON A ROLLING BASIS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

MAINTENANCE PROJECTS THEY WILL HAVE THE REMAINING AIRPLANES INSPECTED WITHIN TWO DAYS.

Oh, come on. This "poor little Southwest, we're the underdogs, why is everyone picking on us" routine has gotten stale. Let's face it, Southwest is 800 lb gorilla in commercial aviation right now. Parker bought USAirways to keep them from taking over the North-East United States and then marching Westward. (*admittedly, the int'l infrastructure and A/C were pretty lucrative too).

If the legacies don't figure something out pretty soon, Southwest will be doing damn near all of the Domestic flying in the country. The Texas, good'ol boy, "golly, we're just trying to run a little airline here" routine drives me nuts. "Set Luv free" my ass!

I think it was because once the oversight was first found, people ignored it and kept on flying. That is a little different...
