Got a DWI about 5 years ago. Is this an automatic disqualification from getting hired to fly professionally at a regional/major?

Mesa would probably take you... I know of one guy they hired that had a dui on his record which he got in the year prior to his interview.

It is not an automatic disqualification anywhere. Be prepared to talk about it and try to turn it into a positive (learning experience etc). It's all about how you present it.

Come to ASA where we all have DUI's....... Or at least the one who hires you.

Tried getting a DUI tonight. Was hoping for a nice long layover in jail with a six month leave of absence from ASA. ASA SUCKS!!!! Do not come to work here.

If you think it's that bad- quit, and free up the slot for someone else........hey, are you senior to me by chance??? It isn't a hostage crisis. Go fly somewhere else then get back to me.....

I personally know four pilots who were hired at major airlines with ONE DUI conviction on their records. One was hired at UAL after his conviction and subsequently at Airtran after he was furloughed. BTW, don't let guys who "think" you're screwed determine your lot in life. They usually don't have any personal experience. When the time is right and you're ready to apply and interview, consult professional interview specialists as to the best strategy regarding this hopefully isolated and far removed situation. These circumstances are more common than you think. Remember, anyone who has drank and driven even once (all of you) has the chance for this to happen to them. Caveat: don't let it happen twice.
Then you really are screwed.

When I was an ASA newhire in '95 I had a classmate who got a DUI the first weekend of ground school....

5 years ago is just long enough that you can probably get hired somewhere. Be prepared to explain it, but be short and to the point, and don't try to blame anyone else for it.

If you were under 25, that will help and if you have a clean driving record since then, that will help too.

Note: If you get another one you really ARE screwed for life...
