While i agree with you gear guy the regs that we use are severely outdated. At the time of writing planes flying above 410 was looked upon as going into outerspace. Now 450 is the new standard and the V and X routinely operate above 450. Especially on long legs like the 550 does.

When was the last time a X or a 550 had an explosive decompression? I just looked up for the last 10 years and all the planes that came up as a decompression were airliners and turboprops. Not long haul business jets.

Diesel you can probably speak to this, cause I heard certain aircraft (Gulfstreams in particular) are exempt from the O2 regs because they will auto descend in a loss of cabin pressure situation. Maybe this is something that should be standard on all new aircraft capable of +FL410. In this new era of sky high fuel prices flying at higher altitudes can mean a significant savings especially at the fractional level where there are large fleets involved. Many people I fly with stay at or below 410 simply to avoid putting on the mask. I too think it is an outdated reg but knowing the FAA pigs will be flying (under their own power) before it ever gets changed.

The reg is not outdated because the bodys requirement for O2 has not changed. The plane may auto descend, but for those of you who have not been through it are in for a big rude awakening if you think you will just wake up at 10,000 feet, feel great and land the aircraft. You will be very lucky if you survive.

When I was in Premier initial a guy in my class had experienced an explosive decompression in the high 40's with the mask ON and he was still briefly incapacitated.

"it does not happen on business jets" is a very deadly assumption in my opinion.

In that case, I will no longer bother with sim training. What a waste of time that is. I mean, when was the last time you had a V1 cut? The fact that it hasnt happened to a bussiness jet in 10 years should be praised. However, it is not a time to swell up with pride and assume that we are now invincible. Therefore, I stand behind the regs and the science that proves it.
 
Qantas just had an explosive decompression.


MANILA, Philippines — A Qantas flight en route to Australia from London made an emergency stop in Manila on Friday after a loud bang punched a hole in the Boeing 747-400's fuselage, officials and passengers said.
There were no injuries, but some of the 345 passengers vomited after disembarking, said Manila International Airport Authority deputy manager for operations Octavio Lina.
In a statement from Sydney, Qantas confirmed the hole in its fuselage and said it was being inspected by engineers.
A report by the Manila International Airport Authority quoting pilot John Francis Bartels, said an initial investigation indicated there was an "explosive decompression." There were no details.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said QF30 made an emergency descent from 29,000 feet to 10,000 feet.
Lina said the cabin's floor gave way, exposing some of the cargo beneath and part of the ceiling collapsed.
"There is a big hole on the right side near the wing," he said, adding it was 2.5 to 3 yards (meters) in diameter.
Passengers who talked to the media at the airport described hearing an explosion and then oxygen masks were released.

Australia's Herald Sun Online quoted passengers as saying the plane plunged 20,000 feet after a door "popped" during the flight.
Michael Rahill, 57, an architect from Melbourne, said the bang sounded "like a tire exploding, but more violently."
The passengers were taken to several hotels while waiting for another plane to Melbourne, said an airline officer who declined to be identified because he wasn't authorized to talk to the media.
Chief Superintendent Atilano Morada, head of the police Aviation Security Group, said his officers, including explosives experts, may assist in the airline's investigation.
"So far, they don't want us to touch it, so we will respect the aircraft owner. But we will make our personnel available if they need assistance in the investigation," he said.
 
Stay below FL410 please... I enjoy the smooth air, lack of weather, being able to use wrong altitudes for direction, less strong winds going westbound, \ as well as getting direct anywhere I want to go while cruising at FL450!
 
So I take it no one on here has flown jets under 135, where the mask needs to be on above 350?
 
yeah, I heard they make 135 pilots put on the mask at 350 b/c they are slower than corporate guys. Just kidding.

That was not an explosive decompression. It was, at best a rapid decompression.

The Hawaiian 737 was a explosive decompression.

Don't bother to take my word for it, look it up yourself.

That was not an explosive decompression. It was, at best a rapid decompression.

The Hawaiian 737 was a explosive decompression.

Don't bother to take my word for it, look it up yourself.

I looked it up. I believe the 6 foot hole was more than ample to do it in 0.1 seconds. Similar incidents (Cargo Doors) were categorized as explosive.

Trust me, when the front windshield left my aircraft, it was explosive. A door seal would be rapid.

I thought the same thing until I went to my ex-wife and asked her to cooperate for the sake of our (*hers also she keeps forgetting*) kids and she belted me in the mouth.

Man. When yer five-year old daughter watches you get your eyes clawed out because someone downsized you out of a job I'd be amazed if you are half as composed as I was when I had my little meltdown. You'll be a bigger man than I am at that point.

The difference between me and the majority who attack me is that I'm more than able to admit and confess my flaws. I'm not perfect. I'm a damned good and safe pilot but a highly flawed human being. But I do keep trying and if any of you were stranded on the side of the road with a flat I'd be the first to stop and help you, believe me.

So, pray for me, pray for yourselves, and pray for my friends who are way more screwed than I am at this point in life. We are in the last days of Rome my friends...

It is my hope that each and every one of you who reads this is safe from harm and enjoys an existence of bliss. Die old in your sleep having lived a wonderful life.

Uh, I'm not unstable. I'm mouthy--I engage my mouth before my brain somtimes (and I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve). There's a difference. You'll never have to guess where I stand on something at any rate--I don't play political games.

But I am flawed. So are you--unless you managed to learn how to walk on water when I wasn't looking or something... There's certainly nothing wrong with being human.

Speaking of O2, here's an oxygen mask for your ride on that high horse. ;)

Every single one of us should make hay while the sun shines and develop some kind of secondary income while we're making money. My friends are buying motorcycles and boats, I bought a rental house. Through that and other endeavors, by the end of this year I plan to be able to lose my job (god forbid, I LOVE my job) and not have to scramble for a job selling lumber.

I have long advocated that a pilot needs to have a skill they keep current, something that they can earn some money with around flying, and something they can fall back on for a bit when flying ends.

It can be bartending, wildland firefighting, EMT, etc. Just some kind of skill to have, and you dont want to wait until you are out of a job, to start thinking of what you can do and getting trained. Just have something you can do when you lose a job, because most likely, it will happen.

Just because it hasn't been reported, doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

I'll start keeping score for you. So far we have, by your own admission:

-You have "Meltdowns"
-Your "mouthy"
-You speak without thought of the consequences
-You readily bash your employers in public, or worse in industry forums
-Your involved in domestic violence with kids in the room
-Your now ex girlfriend was a coke-head
-You may be trying to force yourself out of aviation on a subconscious level
-A career change is on your agenda
-You don't care if what you say in public kills your career
-You tell stories out of school about the people you fly with
-You're not only flawed, you're "highly flawed"


Keep going, I'll be happy to make additions. You really make yourself out to be a great candidate for a pilot position. Or maybe a postal worker.

First of all, "meltdown" is hyperbole. When oh when will you ever learn just what that is?

For example, calling someone who boned you disloyal is not a meltdown. It is just a blunt statement. Ditto with calling an incompetent pilot an incompetent pilot. We can debate the merit of the statement but it is hardly a meltdown.

An editorial rant over an injustice on a public forum is not a meltdown. Your previously mentioned "postal worker" reference however reminds us all what a *true* meltdown really is. Be thankful that most of the world uses a keyboard to express anger.

After reading your list I don't feel so bad about myself. It could always be much worse. Besides, I have a *really* long list of good traits. They more than compensate for the bad ones. :)

Yes it was my term inspired by the muckrakers at another site--and it was an *intentional* overstatement. I didn't have any sort of mental episode whatsoever. I did, however, very seriously contemplate quitting flying altogether. Thankfully g200, gear_guy, 400A, spxdriver, and a few other really fine folks on here gave me some perspective.

Even you helped with some advice. Why you've taken a turn for the slam escapes me.

Next time I will use quotation marks when discussing a "meltdown" so you will know it is not intended to be taken literally.
