Northwest Pilots Will Not Honor AMFA Strike

Bloomington, Minn. --- The Master Executive Council (MEC) of the NWA chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l has decided that NWA pilots will not honor the picket lines of striking NWA employees represented by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association. Union leaders judged that a sympathy strike action was not in the best interests of NWA pilots and other NWA employees.

"I am deeply disappointed the parties were unable to reach a negotiated settlement," NWA MEC Chairman Capt. Mark McClain said. "The current environment requires labor costs to be part of an overall solution. Unfortunately, Northwest management continues to overplay its hand by demanding labor costs well below its competitors."

ALPA has stated since April 2003 that NWA management and all NWA employees would need to participate in a joint solution to help the company overcome its financial difficulties. NWA pilots acted in December 2004 when they agreed to provide NWA with $265 million annually in wage, work rule and benefit changes.

"There is still time to secure our company's future, but it will require a combined effort by NWA employees and management," McClain said. "Union leaders and senior management must meet face to face and hammer out a joint solution now. It will not be simple or painless. Everyone, including management, will need to share in the sacrifice."

The NWA chapter of ALPA represents 5,700 NWA pilots. Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world's oldest and largest pilot union representing more than 64,000 pilots at 41 airlines in the United States and Canada. Visit the ALPA website at http://www.alpa.org.

AMFA brought this upon themselves. They are a preditory group who built themselves up by attacking other unions and groups in very nasty quasi legal campaigns.
They talked the talk but burned too many bridges to walk the walk.
Marching into a battle that you are destined to lose isn't brave, it is stupid. If ALPA had struck NWA it would have been suicide. Those who condemn the NWA pilots don't have their own careers on the line.
You don't go into battle with everything on the line unless you know you can win. Otherwise you retreat and come back to fight another day when the odds are more in your favor.

INMHO,

Pilot's, FA and all should have supported EACH OTHER. Why? l NWA mngmt needs to be put in its place!!!!!

Solidarity is the only way!! The Pilot's are next. NWA mngmt has succeeded in dividing their workforce.

"UNIONS ARE GREAT" :)

Thats really cool... Did every DAL, NWA pilot have their career on the line when EAL pilots were being encouraged to stick to Frank "to save the profession"

"You don't go into battle unless you can win" Did anyone at your airline or ALPA think of that before sacrificing EAL.

Your just proving the point I am making, that everyone in this union are backstabing, talk behind your back, look out for only yourself, hypocrites.

Agreed. All 3 unions tried to make a "collective deal" as was done in 1993. AMFA and PFAA walked away, essentilly leaving each union to their own agenda. Management took advantage of that, and screwed AMFA. No other union on the property is supporting AMFA, (stating facts, not opinion).

NWA mngmt needs to be put in its place!!!!!

If you know of a way......speak out. They have the economy, the NMB and the Administration on their side, and in their pocket.

Solidarity is the only way!!

See first response above.

The Pilot's are next.

Actually, the F/As are next. Then the pilots.

NWA mngmt has succeeded in dividing their workforce.

They have taken advantage of the lack of cooperation among the unions and have divided the workgroups.

The only way I know of taking control of your company is to STAND TOGETHER NOW--------->Forget 1993. I know, you will say," it is easier for outsiders to say".

I know I am not in your position or your predicament. It just seems appropriate that unions stick together rather than pull-away. Isn' that why the MIGHTY Union is there for?

Just Observing,

Animal-

Reread my post. ALPA wanted ALL THREE UNIONS to make a COLLECTIVE STAND against Management.

AMFA told ALPA to F*CK OFF, they didn't want any part of it. Neither did PFAA. Both of them REFUSED to sign Confidentiality agreements, so they couldn't access the Company's books, plans, etc. They took a stand, and the Company had the upper hand. Its hard to do a group hug with someone who gives you the finger.

The individual mechanics are not at fault, it's their inept leadership that caused the problem they now face.

320AV8R said it well. A great group of people with lousy representation. They could have seen the books over a year ago and dealt with the situation. Trying to compete with an airline going into its 3rd year of Ch-11 is where the outrage should be. The giant sucking sound you here isn't NAFTA and the jobs going south. It is the sound of UAL cash diving into the lawyers pockets.
