Hue Hefner owns his 747. I heard him and Bill Gates were the only two to own a 747 privately. Imagine the parties that must take place on that plane? Hefs I mean, not Gates.

If my memory serves me correct, I believe John Travolta also "owns" a 747 present day and he is also typed in it. I could mistaken though. On top of the 47 he also owns (or did) he also has and flies a 707

JT still has the 707, he had it at the DAY airshow last month, 707JT it is in a Qantas paint job.

Travolta owns and fly’s the 707 and is typed in a 747, but does not own 747. He is an "Ambassador-at-large" for Qantas, which he did a "Spirit of Friendship tour" for, and got the type rating through (amongst others things) for the 47. I always see his G2 or 707 at PIE in Clearwater, FL - (Clearwater is where HQ for Scientology is)- Imagine that!

Hello,
Here's one that we missed, Clint Eastwood. He learned to fly helicopters at Palomar/McClelland field in Carlsbad, Ca in the early 90's. In fact, he walked by me twice and I didn't recognize him until later in the day he bought a sectional in the pilot shop on the field. Didn't talk to him, but watched him doing autorotations in Hughes 300.
As for John Travolta, he recieved training at through a publicity deal with QANTAS, but is not type rated in the 747-400. Nor is he typed in his own 707-138B. He employs a full-time crew to fly the airplane, and "acts" as PIC. I don't think he'd get insured until he gets a little more time. He is typed in the Lear, Gulfstream and strangely enough VFR only in the Citation.
I'm not certain, but I think that Greg Norman (Aussie golfer) is a pilot too. He owns more than a couple of aircraft and helicopters. He is a very savvy business man like Arnold Palmer and is a millionaire many times over independent of his golf career.
One last celeb thats a pilot, albeit from years ago. Bob Barker is a former Naval Aviator. Trained at the end of the war, he didn't reach the Pacific theatre until the end of hostilities and was honorably discharged.
Not sure where Worf picked up the "5,4,3,2,1" thing, but he's had a flight with the Thunderbirds, so I might have picked it up from them. Otherwise as far as military tactical jet operations are concerned. Most (if not all) inter-flight communications while flying formation is accomplished through hand-signals. This is done for a couple of reasons. First, if you go "NORDO" (No radio) and operating with hand signals makes the transition to NORDO much more seemless. Second, if in EMCON (Emissions Control) "chit-chat" on the radio is about THE easist way short of turning on your RADAR of telegraphing where you are to the enemy. Given the current state-of-the-art data link systems that are not only highly directional (making them extremely difficult to jam or spoof) talking on the radio anymore than absolutely necessary unprofessional and possibly fatal. One exception to that is helicopters. Just a little triva for y'all out there.

female celebs...

Are there any female celebs who fly? And I don't mean Patty Wagstaff, et al...

I read an article about Angelina Jolie and in it she said she wants to learn to fly helicopters. Maybe when I go through training I'll add helicopter ratings and get an instructors certification.

Michael Dorn celebrity wings show

Did anyone think the chick was about to jump in his lap? She seemed to be flirting pretty hard. His head swelled up during that show...seemed like a good guy, but the dork factor was high at the end...

Thanks for correcting me Kaman; you're right Travolta is only checked out as an FO in the 47. Sorry for the wrong info.

about the guy from offspring comment earlier. Its the lead singer, not sure of his name. Its a CJ based out of SNA, you can't miss it with the huge anarchy sign on the tail.

Anyone else think it's strange to put an Anarchy symbol on your own private plane? I mean, if anarchy really did break out, exist, happen, whatever... would anyone really have a private jet?

Labbats is absolutly right. It is totally hypocritical. If this idiot from offspring actually believes in anarchy what in the hell is he doing with the ultimate symbol of capitalism. It is like equating good and evil (anarchy).
Sorry I am not trying to hijack this into a political thread, but that whole anarchy citation (if its true) is absolutly absurd.

Publicity. Everytime he shows up with his jet people ask who owns it. People say the lead singer of Offspring and then the groups name gets out there more. Pure publicity. It's the same as Pizza Hut painting their trademark on their plane.

Anarchy??

Now I have not seen a recent Offspring CD, its been a good 4 or 5 years. Before that I was a big fan (still am, Im just stuck in pre 1997). In that time I dont remember ever seeing anything political, let alone an anarchy symbol. It has nothing to do with the band. Now if it was Rage Agains the Machines' jet (that's laughable), I could see the corolation.
Now I will admit, I am not one that truely listens to the lyrics. When ever I do that I usually hear something I disagree with, then endup disliking the band.
I do agree with mainah however, its a conversation starter.

Hmm... *light bulb goes on*

Well, maybe I should give her a call and offer to have her be my first student next month! :)

Ahh, never mind, she's just way too weird for me. :p

Last summer I saw Angelina Jolie at Van Nuys taking flying lessons. I would do just about anything to spend some time with her in the cockpit.

I think Bruce Dickerson flyes for an airline in England, 737 is IIRC.

The Offspring's last album was Conspiracy Of One. Came out in 2000. Its very Americana like. If you don't already have it I highly reccomend it.

Actually, I'd highly recommend all of Offspring's albums, they're all quite good. From "Ixnay on the Hombre", track 3, "Mota".... cracks me up. Gotta listen fast and loud though!

And then there's the "Smash" album from '94; track 3 again, "Bad Habit". Turn it up. Louder. I kinda feel the same way riding the freeways in Houston on my motorcycle... and strippers play it from time to time at the clubs, so it's got that going for it, which is nice.

"Stupid dumbsh!t godd@mn motherf@cker!", a classic line from Bad Habit...

Agreed

Saw Edward Norton at Teterboro (TEB) about a month ago in a C182. He rents from the FBO where I'm doing my IR.

Dave

He was on "Inside the Actor's Studio", the host of which is also a pilot, and mentioned that he intended to learn how to fly. Guess he fulfilled that promise, good for him.

I WAS TALKING WITH MICHAEL DORN IN JULY, AND HE TOLD ME HIS SABRE JET HAS CORRSION AND WILL BE PARTED OUT-BUMMER
BUT HE IS NOW IN THE MARKET FOR A F104 STARFIGHTER-WHAT BALLS-ALSO ON THAT SHOW HE DID-WHY ON LANDING WAS THE HOST STANDING UP WATCHING THE LANDING AND NOT BELTED IN??????

THE COMMENT ABOUT ARRRNOLD GETTING A G4-I SAW HIS AIRPLANE WHEN HE DID BATMAN AND IT WAS A G3

LEVAR BURTON ALSO FLYS

CLIFF ROBERTSON FLYS AND HAS FOR ALONG TIME

I THINK TOM CRUSE ALSO FLYS GULFSTREAMS AS WELL AS THE P51

Actually, it is not necessarily hypocritical to be an anarchist and own a private jet. Anarchist philosophy covers many levels and is often wrongly pigeon holed into one entity. If you read 19th or early 20th century anarchists like Mikhail Bakunin or Emma Goldman and apply some of their philosphies with present day realities, one could see that anarchism can work within the capitalist system to develop a coexistence.
Anarchism vs socialism vs communism vs capitalism (none of which in a pure form will work) are not black and white issues. There are plenty of shades of gray.

Unequivocally likening capitalism with "good" and "anarchy" as "evil" is absurd.

Maverick

My dad was a Navy fighter pilot and he said that while they were filming Top Gun Tom Cruise was taken for a ride in the F-14 and after only a few minutes he was sick and supposedly did not like it. I guess he didn’t really have the need for speed at the time nor the stomach. He was on Leno about 7-8 months ago and was talking about buzzing Spielberg’s house in his P-51 after the release of Minority Report. I was surprised to hear that he was a pilot now.

I remember when they were filming Top Gun, I was about 11 and we got to go see the sets and the black F-5's they were using. My brother and I used to play shuffleboard in the O-Club lounge (were the famous serenade took place) during Sunday brunch. Remember it like it was yesterday.

Ahh, those were the good days.

Steve Mcqueen was a pilot. he flew out of santa paula,ca.

up until his death in 1980 he kept his classic cars and motorcycles in his hanger there. he was known to "hold court" in a chair outside his hanger and take old folks and children for a tour of his hanger. he is still listed in the FAA database.

Ed Mcmahon (here's Johnny) was a marine corp fighter pilot in the korean war. he always told johnny that he was afraid of heights. that stumped johnny.

by the way johnny carson was a licensed pilot as well.

Micky Gilly flies I'm told..

Most of ya'll probably don't recall Roy Clark (Hee Haw) flew his own MU-2.

I believe Larry Mahan (six time world champ rodeo cowboy) flew his own C-310.

Tom Landry flew, as did Walt Garrison. Cessna used to do print ads with Walt's picture.

Yes, I AM that old, and live in Texas...

:D

Hello,
Yes, indeed Tom Landry was a pilot, and not only as a civilian, but flew B-17s in the ETO during WWII. Another former NFL head coach that was an active pilot was Chuck Noll of the Pittsburgh "Steel Curtain" days. Chuck owned and flew a Beech Duke.
If I were to pick THE one celebrity, athlete or actor that flew it would be without question Ted Williams. Not only did he volunteer during his heyday of the 1940's to fly as a Marine Corps pilot, but also flew in Korea in the Grumman Panther. In fact, he was in the same squadron as John H. Glenn (astronaut/Ohio Senator). Ted was an inspiration more for his unselfish patriotism than his incredible abilty, talent and love of baseball. I regret that I never saw him play.
