I did reread, still don't get it.

I am all for improved medical standards, vice picking an age. Because are many out there flying who would not pass that medical.

But when someone cries age and safety, it is really all about get out of my seat, pure greed.

Ah! a little name calling; it so FI. Now back to our regular programing, I did reread, still don't get it. Again sorry about your medical problem, but how I am supposed to know anything about that in your post?

Two words-Dr. Adrian. At least he no longer holds an AME ticket. Unfortunately, he's not alone. How often do you see folks on any aviation blog asking about AMEs in this city or that? They're not looking for "thorough" doctors.

Back to the age thing. In my 50+ years of life, I have never seen anyone face this sort of discrimination in any other field. Why not limit every field to 10 years practice? Then folks will get out of each other's way so we can all have a turn at "our seat". Sheesh.
 
Full blood chemistry work-ups at least once a year, neuro-cognitive testing at least every 5 years and range of motion evaluations at every physical would be a good place to start. That is if they really are concerned about safety.

According to the young'uns, it's got NOTHING to do with selfishness and their sense of entitlement----it's all about "safety." :rolleyes:

You want to see some real vitriol, check out the "Canadian Pilot Age" thread that's been floating around for a couple of months. Now, that'll make you nauseous.:puke:
 
We ought to eliminate Smokers and Drinkers too. You know you have to pay higher life insurance rates. Maybe a 5 mile run as part of the medical on a tread mill.
Heck, everyone left would be a GV CA.:D
 
Gotta love these original new topics. Let the old farts fly till they die for christ sake!! Why should we persecute the current blue hairs for having 3 ex wives, $700,000 mortagage's at 52 years old and generally having no frick'n clue how to manage a dollar.

Yea, good idea, but even better lets go with the NAMI physical starting at age 40, add taking the ACT every year and scoring a minimum of 29 (mental ability), BP of 110/70, and 20 push ups, 50 sit ups and run a 9 minute mile. With all of the drops out, I might find a really good job.

NAMI for everyone from day one. There would be a 20% reduction in the pilot supply starting initial flight training. Height Weight standards ... PFT twice a year. Fail and you are out.

That's the way to create a pilot shortage... You know I like supply-side economics. Knock'em out of the box before they even get started. Why concentrate on kicking people out the back side a couple years early?

No I meant one mile in nine minutes, I wanted to be sure I qualified. I wanted to throw 20/20 uncorrected in there also, but that would have been too much. But now that I think about it, this is about safety, and just think if someone lost their glasses, how unsafe that could be.

I am sweating my medical coming up next week, I might have to get glasses to pass.

It would be if you were trying to pass a NAMI physical.

But if everyone had to ... there would be a lot fewer people competing for flying jobs and the rest of us would be making more money and retiring sooner!

Never mind glasses ... Try being one pound overweight. Its an all day physical ... not 20 minutes and out with a medical certificate.

Such a medical really isn't necessary for what we do. I'm not for a hard age limit. I do ask that the other guy doesn't nod off randomly, doesn't miss the bulk of the radio calls, and is physically capable of helping with the bags. If he can't manage those things (and some can't), then it's time to hang it up.
 
So I'm 52 and been flying fractional for a long time. I've flown with young guys that were both sharp and horrible. I've flown with old guys that were both sharp and horrible. Unfortunately my experience is that the older guys are disproportionally horrible when compared to the young guys. Unscientific my history may be, it does shed light on this issue.

I'm hoping not to become an old snow cone flying because I've nothing else to do with me time. Like it or not there are many at netjets that aren't doing it for the money. It's because they oly identify themselves as pilots and when you are no longer flying how do they identify themselves?

My skills flying are not as good as they once were. My reaction times have slowed. But as of yet I've still enjoyed positive changes etc... That are both technical and structural. Unfortunately I've seem more and more old guys that can't stand change, like the iPad for example. Christ I've never heard so much bitching about that change. When you can longer accept and keep up with these changes it's time to get out. Unfortunately the only ones I've head bitching about these changes are over 65 crowd.

As one who is closer to 65 than 35 believe that mandatory retirement ages should be in place for ALL commercial CAPTS..... These guys can still make some fantastic sics but when they are making the ultimate decisions I have to question them quite often.

Some of the worst old guys are the career change at 50 to become a pilot.
Then they got one a fractional when it was easy to get on and cant fly worth a S%^t...

HELL YEAH I think 65 should be a cut off age like the majors.

As for "passing the medical". these guys would never pass a medical exam in Europe, Asia or even most of Latin America...
Neither could some of the overweight 30 and 40 year olds I see around.
 
When my wife and I got married we both agreed that I would make all the big decisions while she would make all the small ones.

The funny thing is that in 14 years of marriage there have never been any big decisions .....
 
The only person who is never wrong more than my wife ... my mother.

She told me not to get into commercial flying and stick to Engineering. Not listening to her has cost me....


I agree! I should have gone into psychiatry, would have made a lot more money and dealt with fewer lunatics. :-)
