I don't normally comment on the union issue but I think I will this time. My personal opinion regarding SkyWest having a union is that we don't need one RIGHT NOW. When I weigh the benefits of SAPA (SkyWest Airlines Pilots Association) with the unknown of what UPA (Unified Pilots Association)...
I have a friend from Russia now flying for a U.S. regional airline. He started in the Russian Air Force and after obtaining his Russian ATP equivalent and a TU-154 type rating came over to the states about 4 years ago. The FSDO didn't recognize much of his flight time over there and they just...
Some more input regarding holds. Nonpublished holding is generally a failure of the ATC system. Things get too saturated and they have to put you in a nonpublished hold. If it's published then the slowdown has been known to happen before but a nonpublished hold means things have really gotten...
But on a checkride you have to show proper entries. I had a student of mine fail a multi-instrument check ride because he liked to do his own hold entries because like he said, "they are not regulatory in nature". He came back with me and we did some remedial and he learned correct holding...
When I started off I wanted to fly corporate because of schedules I've read on this thread about being home a lot. I started off flight instructing and once I hit 1200 hours instead of applying for a regional like others with my time I started flying freight. I knew I had to network to get...
Is that why? I imagine that is a big reason. I wonder also if the weight of the engine pylons on the wings would be less than on the fuselage. Whatever Honda's reasons, they are thinking "outside the box". Something the aviation industry needs right now.
Denizen, Thanks, she's my little...
I wonder if the wing mounted engines vs. the fuselage mounted engines are to help increase the airplanes max zero fuel weight. It would transfer much of the weight of the airplane to the wings instead of so much in the fuselage, the limiting factor for the max zero fuel weight.
This information is taken from a thread about this on the SkyWest forums a few years ago answering this exact question.
"CF34-3A1 = Series 100
CF34-3B1 = Series 200
Add center fuel tank option = ER
Add center fuel tank and buy 53,000 lb MTOW placards= LR
So, SkyWest's original aircraft (i.e.403...
My understanding is that the United furloughees could be going to the right seat to the Brasilia as well as the RJ. The company wouldn't let seniority be superceded. Meaning those Brasilia FOs that are no longer seat locked have first choice regarding RJ FO transition class, then if there are...
Try applying to Flight Express. They fly mostly C-210s but have a few Barons for the more senior pilots. They don't require a lot of multi time. It's good Part 135 single pilot IFR experience. Once you get enough seniority then you can fly the barons and build the multi time.
Part 135.243, Pilot in Command Qualifications
(b) under VFR requires commercial license, 500 hours flight time, 100 cross-country of which 25 are night, instrument rating or ATP.
(c) under IFR requires commercial license, 1200 hours flight time, 500 hours cross-country, 100 hours night, 75...
As far as flight instructing jobs: American Aviation, Great Western Aviation, Salt Lake Community College has a flight program and may need instructors, Westminster College does too, Utah Valley State College in Orem/Provo has a flight program, Utah State University in Logan has one too. Utah...
Two weeks ago I was nonreving on a flight with a bad cold/fever etc. On descent my right ear wouldn't clear. It hurt pretty bad and I couldn't hear in that ear. Eventually after about an hour the pain subsided to a numb ache. My ear didn't clear for about 48 hours. This also happened to me...
Well, let's say you are away from base 300 hours a month. For a $0.50 per diem raise (say $1.50 to $2.00) then 300 x .50 = $150/month more. Let's say you fly an average of 85 hours a month. $150/85 hours = $1.76. You would need a wage increase of at least $1.76 more per hour to make the same...
Here's another argument for reading back the runway. SkyWest had a pilot violated a few years ago for taking off the wrong direction in SLC one day. They were landing one direction when the crew picked up the ATIS and when they had just come in previously. On taxi out they were a little late...
In my past experience going into Calgary and Vancouver:
Arrival = Approach
Apron = Ramp
Position and wait = Position and hold
Don't expect a landing clearance till on short final
You can get your IFR clearance 45 minutes prior to departure instead of 30 minutes prior.
Visibility if often...
At SkyWest we pick up a release (6-10 pages of paper. I wish we could get our release via ACARS but that's supposed to happen some year they say.) The release it has pertinent information for the flight: weather, flight plan, ship number, flight number, crewmembers, etc. That release is...
