    Greed Greed Greed

I remember reading once that, even if AAL pilots worked for free, they still wouldn't be able to match the CASM of SWA. So what? What an airline's pilots get paid has little to do with the overall financial health of an airline. Somebody help Bally with his spelling and grammar, please...

    Will united Airlines Liquidate

It won't be up to United - it'll be up to the creditors. If things get to the point where what they owe starts to equal what they own - and there's still no real change in plans, then they might have the plug pulled on them. It'll be a seriously ugly thing to see, but nobody's ruling it out...

Smart move not to go to CO?

We had in the neighborhood of 600 on furlough. This month, we started recalling guys - 169 total for the year. That won't even cover retirements for the year. Then, management says they want to increase flying 6% this year. Lineholders are having lines built to +- 80 hours, and reserves (like...

    737 type tax info

Don't get so worked up - just deduct it and forget about it. If the IRS has any beef about it, they'll give you a call... Then you can tell them that under your fifth amendment rights, you don't have to furnish them any information that they can use to prosecute you with. That said, it's a...

    190 rolls out

I think usair is in a blundering panic to slash everything in sight. We're hoping CalExpress gets a big enough raise to make the casm difference even greater between a Boeing and an RJ.

    U.S. Customs Aviation

I flew for customs for ten years 1988 - 1998. I quit as soon as the opportunity presented itself - the same as about a third of the rest of the pilots did in the late 90's. From what I hear from the guys that are still there, is that they still spend a lot of time away from home TDY. That's...

Tax deductions for CFII and MEI?

I think the wording has to be along the lines of "furthurance of your career". If what you're trying to deduct will make you more money (and, to the IRS-mind, pay more taxes), then, by all means, deduct it. I deducted my 737 type rating, I paid for myself.

    DAL CEO swings low

Wanna start a rumor? Gordon Bethune wants to buy Delta and put all the Delta pilots under our contract - that'll settle the Delta dilemma once and for all. Continental doesn't have the money to pull it off now, but Gordon has a bunch of buddies on Wall Street that believe in him (like Chase...

    wage rates

What agency? I guess the GS scale isn't used anymore? I was at customs and we started at GS-11/step 1 which was about $35K per year (with overtime).

    Scabs at Jetblue

I have no firsthand knowledge of what transpired here in '83... I only know what I hear. That part about "being told to strike" was from a former assistant chief pilot that is now in the training department in Houston. Like I said, from a conspiracy-theory viewpoint, it sounded plausible.

    Scabs at Jetblue

...did anybody tell UAL to go on strike because it was bad for the rest of us? hmmmmm....? The bottom line that I give guys I fly with is this, you f**cked up in 1983, but here's your chance to redeem yourself - bid all your vacation, and don't scab me, if I have to walk. To tell you the...

    United

Eastcoast flying is more than PVD, Islip, Manchester, et al. PHL is really sticking their necks out - performance-wise. You don't see SWA in the big markets along the eastern seaboard - and they don't have to - they make their own markets from other places. Boeing recommends a taxi speed of no...

    When would majors hire again?

At Continental, we have a new system bid (for seats and aircraft) supposedly coming out this winter, to become effective next summer. Word is, that up to 200 of the 400 furloughees are going to be recalled on this bid. Retirements are going to hit a major upswing through 2008, hitting 300+ for...

    Pilot Concessions

Continental pilots haven't given anything back... Gordon Bethune is lauding the fact that our employee groups are still getting paid the same as before. Who'd've thought the bottom would come up to meet us? We were always the ones on the bottom of the pay scale. That said, we have 400 or so...

    Mesa Are They Hiring???

Excellent reply! Mesa is low-balling other regionals to undercut the competition with their major partners to gain routes that ACA, Piedmont, Chataqua, et al are flying. If you guys aren't careful, we'll ALL be flying for Mesa for $12 an hour to start.
