Flight cancellations have spiked at American Airlines, which is fighting with unhappy pilots.
The Wall Street Journal's veteran travel reporter, Scott McCartney, on Tuesday told travelers to avoid the carrier because "American's operation is in shambles."
Denny Kelly, an aviation expert and former pilot, said he agreed that travelers should avoid the Fort Worth-based airline.
"If you're going to fly a trip from Dallas to someplace and you have a choice, and you have to be there on time or within a reasonable amount of time ... why take a chance on American?" he said. "Why take a chance on [if] a flight's going to be delayed or canceled? Go on somebody else that doesn't have that problem."
But that could be easier said than done when flying in or out of North Texas.

"The problem is, at DFW, 75 percent of the flights are American, so what do you do?" Kelly said.
American said on Monday that it would reduce the number of flights at least partly because of staffing shortages.
American spokesman Bruce Hicks said the airline was cutting its schedule for the rest of September and October by 1 to 2 percent because of "a number of factors." Among them is an increase in pilots calling in sick and maintenance reports filed by flight crews.
The airline has struggled over the past few days with a large number of pilots calling in sick and a higher-than-usual number of requests for aircraft maintenance.
An American Airlines representative told NBC 5 on Tuesday that it is aware of the higher sick levels and maintenance requests. The company said the airline is being proactive and is taking steps now to prevent more problems in the future.
American canceled more flights on Sunday and Monday than any other airline.
On Tuesday, only 53 percent of American's flights arrived on time.
"I would say it's about a D-minus," Kelly said.
Tuesday's on-time number was higher than Monday's 39 percent and Sunday's 48 percent.
Kelly said the situation is ultimately the fault of the airline's management because of how it has mistreated the pilots.
"The pilots are the ones that are involved in this job action, if you will," he said. "And, of course, it's not organized, they say. But that's exactly what it is. And the bottom line is, if a pilot follows every rule in the FARs — the federal regulations — the contract, the company regulations, they'll shut the airline down, and that's exactly what they're doing."

So, which regs, rules, and contractual parts should pilots follow? Which ones should just be disregarded to keep the airline running on-time? Should they fly with broken parts on the plane?

For a guy that is a "former pilot," this McCartney guy sure sounds like the typical, sensationalist journalist... He of all people should know better....

Just 10,000 pissed off individual pilots. Did Horton not see this coming, or does he just think he can weather the storm. I see it getting much, MUCH worse.
 
American's greatest fear has always been, what if the pilots get it right this time...

Hopefully they do better then the Eastern, PanAm, etc. pilots. While one can debate what one is owed the reality is always the rock only has so much blood to give; fair or not.

Sounds like the Airtran side. Exchange 10,000 with 1,500 and Horton with Kelly.

word I'm hearing is that sick calls are actually no more than they were last spring. As far as write ups, maybe they need to hire more maintenance guys.
 
I must say though airlining the other day, our taxi time at DFW from landing to the gate was 28 minutes! I could have literally walked faster than we were taxiing. I was pissed but, I get it---LET THAT MF BURN! Enjoy AMR management!
 
Typical management, blame someone else for their own shortcomings. Gee, I can't begin to wonder why there would be such an unmotivated workforce.

Short-sighted so called M.B.A's think they control the airline. I'm certain the lot of them couldn't manage a whorehouse at a navy shipyard.

True dat. Pilot sick time is running average right now - no big spikes. Nice try, management... 20% increase??? yeah right.

F/As sick time is ATSRONOMICAL (of course, company never mentioned them.)

Mechanics all ticked off due to 4400 layoffs... Merry Christmas.

Oh, on top of that, we've got the FAA crawling ALL OVER our aircraft, procedures, and operations.

Overall, what we predicted with the No vote is happening exactly as we said it would. Now the company has suddenly approached APA wanting to negotiate again.... oh the irony. :rolleyes:

No these guys are demonstrating courage in standing up to the erosion of our profession. I admire the hell out of the APA and it's members. AA management is overreaching and it is on display for all to see. Wait until boy wonder comes after the pilots at NJA. Are you just going to roll over and take it G4 in the midst of record company profits? Grow a pair.

AA Pilots, boldly going where no pilot group has gone before! However, we must thank the pilot groups that have gone through BK before, acknowledging the fact that THEY were the ones who blazed the trails, illuminating the drastic steps we are taking (and must take, for the profession) today.

I'm an ALPA member. I for one would not mind being assessed some money to be spent helping APA. What does APA need right now? Money? Legal?

you have got to be one of the most clueless "pilots" I've ever seen, if you are even a pilot... do you even understand the industry you chose to work in?
 
This is a good message to the creditors.....equity in a reorganized airline that doesn't work is worth little or nothing. Cramming something down the pilot's throats isn't going to result in a functional airline. There's a difference between what Horton wants and what he needs to get the company reorganized, he's going for a big land grab and it's not going to work.

Don't mind G4... He's a Netjets Gulfstream pilot... Was formerly on the NON-UNION Netjets International side... And has been pissed off and anti-union ever since he was forced to join the Netjets North America side and the in house union at Netjets...

He's probably the most despised poster on the fractional side.. His identity has never been revealed, but he is undoubtedly a feable man with very little backbone. We established that fact this time last year when the merger happened amongst the Netjets divisions.

He represents everything the furloughed Netjets pilots despise. An all about me attitude. He undoubtedly would screw over his fellow pilots to either save his own ass or for personal gain....

He is best suited for some corporate flight job where the aviation employees have to spend countless hours on their knees pleasing their bosses. Which is what he most likely did while at the non-union Netjets International division.
