I'd say most of the complaining on this thread/topic comes from the "get out of my seat" crowd.
 
I retired at 60 because it was the limit 8 years ago. I am glad I did because there is more to life than flying airplanes. I don't like FO's saying hull losses are not ocurring because they babysit the over 60 captain. On rare occasions, that is true, I have been there trying to keep a semi asleep captain going the right direction but most guys that retired at 60 were sharp and even as an FO didn't think they should be forced to retire. I know you don't like the stagnation but don't make it what it isn't.

I was flying with one of our oldest the other day. He can't hear. I mean he really can't hear anything. He's got these hearing aids that are about a 50/50 at best. So we get to the gate and we see the captain who brought it in and he's another one our oldest pilots. For some reason he's lost his voice. He can't talk; He's just moving his mouth and gesturing trying to be apologetic as he attempts to describe what he just wrote up. His mouth is moving, but there is no noise coming out. So the hearing aid captain starts screwing with his ears trying to adjust the hearing aids. Nothing. The other FO and myself made eye contact and I could tell we were both thinking the same thing. We bolted. We were both sick of making up for these guys. The gate area was full of customers and the FAs were there. But the FAs left them as well. I think it took about ten minutes until they finally decided to write messages to each other on the paperwork. What's crazy is nobody can intervene on this kind of thing. They are both check airman. They have friends in the FAA and they make it clear they will retaliate if you have anything to critique them on. it's really screwed up...

If this campaign starts, I'll be the 1st to show up in DC to testify about my experiences flying with the over 60 crowd, esp. before and after daylight hours. It won't be pretty. There is a difference and many of us have now seen it.

The day I even HEAR about an age 67 or 70 campaign is the day I start writing up sleepy heads, guys asking me to land when it's dark, and missed radio calls when it's my leg. Go ahead, make my day.

Rant off...

PS There's a reason we haven't had a hull loss, yet. It's called the other guy.

Hundreds older than 65 at the frax (nj, flex, cit air, flops) and zero retiring from a bud. Many in their 70s. And these are guys flying the wealthiest people in the world. They won't let go until they heart attack out, which is rare. Just watch. Age 70 next year and less than 10% will retire after 65.
 
I know this is not a popular view, but I fly with over 60 pilots often and I don't feel at all that I am babysitting them at all, capable and experienced pilots one and all.

But of course the medical standards here in Japan for over 60 guys are very strict
 
I wonder how many of the kids have the balls to tell the geezers they should get the hell out of "their" seat.....

Why should they? Because a bunch of young guys feel entitled to an upgrade. You play the rules in force at the time, not the rules in place 4 years ago.

Perhaps if some of these boys spent more time observing instead of posting on the geezermeter they'd learn something.

Implement JAA medical standards in the US and you'd have a HUGE pilot shortage.
