"It turns out that the human body itself produces a large amount of acetone when a person follows an extreme low-carb diet (i.e. "protein breath") and most breathalyzers cannot distinguish between acetone and alcohol."

So I guess alcohol produces a big reading too. Damn. I hear this guy was under the impression SWA still had the 1-2-3 drink specials on their overnights, and was just getting in shape for the transition. No pilot left behind..

Run along son. Your student is waiting and that 152 is booked for the next hours.

MaxThrottle is a SWA pilot who recently created a new screen name. It might even be BobDylan (who is actually a SWA pilot borrowing a buddy's login).

Either way, with 7 posts, all anti-AAI B.S. that are combative, to say the least, he's going to make my ignore list in short order.

Why am I against drug-testing? Because drug-testing solves a problem that doesn't exist, while ignoring the real problem- impaired performance.

Sure, you can be an insomniac neurotic who is in the midst of a terrible divorce and custody fight and has been living on pretzels and coffee, but as long as you pee clean, you're "good to go".
So what about someone who drives up on a DUI checkpoint, gets stops and blows a .20 (very hammered). Is this entrapment? I've heard of people getting DUIs who claim that they are safer drivers drunk than many people on the road who are sober. Maybe, maybe not, however, there has to be some standard. By saying that a major airline pilot who just downed 10 rum and cokes is safer than a tired, underpaid, commuting, just divorced regional pilot is not very logical. You can't test for "tired" or "stressed." New enhanced rest rules, no matter how conservative, will do nothing to stop pilots from flying tired.

I'm not saying any of that, Chief. I'm saying that I think that drug-testing is a waste of time and money (unless you work for one of the large companies that get the millions of dollars in revenue).

My point is that we should be teaching crew how to be aware when they or the other pilot aren't performing properly, regardless of the circumstances, instead of screening urine specimens for drugs that aren't even of remote interest to airline pilots . . . PCP . . . . heroin? GMAFB! Xanax, Ambien, and antidepressants, maybe, but they don't test for those.

Um, try again Sherlock. I'm not SWA but would love to be and I find it fascinating that you have the audacity to try to negotiate any SLI after loudly proclaiming on this very website how you would give anything to be stapled. Now you're backtracking and not even man enough to admit it. You're a farce.

Jon- I think that's a valid point- "hammered" ought to be tested for and have consequences- .05 I'm not that up in arms about.
My points are why the higher limits than drivers? Another pilot said it, but more and more airlines are going to a policy where if you have ANY TRACE amount of alcohol then you are fired immediately and will have to go through a process to maybe get your job back. That's where I'm calling it way over-board and a witch-hunt.

As far as drugs- I'll never forget meeting a pilot who did coke on his days off. His justification, which made no sense bc the two drugs have very different highs--was He really just want to smoke weed, but it stays in your system too long. Coke doesn't show up after a few days.

Can't tell you if that's true- bc to back up what Ty said- I don't have any desire to do either.
