I think we are ok this time. Too many retirements coming and we are bringing quite a few new guys onboard, another bunch starting sometime this month.

Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL), the world’s second-largest carrier, said it is buying nine used MD-90 jets from Japan Airlines Corp. to replace older DC-9s that are being retired.
Deliveries will start in January after the planes are refurbished to match the rest of Delta’s fleet, and Delta will “continue to look for opportunities to acquire used MD-90s,” Nat Pieper, vice president of fleet strategy, wrote yesterday on the Atlanta-based airline’s internal employee website.
The 160-seat MD-90s, made by a Boeing Co. (BA) predecessor, will be flown on domestic routes instead of the DC-9s, which average 34 years old, Pieper said. He didn’t disclose financial terms, and a spokesman, Trebor Banstetter, declined to comment beyond confirming the posting’s authenticity.
Delta has been buying used MD-90s for about “one-fourth the cost” of a new Boeing 737-800, President Ed Bastian said at a December investor presentation. That 737 model has a list price of $80.8 million. Airlines typically receive a discount.

??? I'm not exactly splitting atoms on my days off but replacing diesel 9's with bigger diesel 9's doesn't exactly make good long term thinking in this fuel environment. At least they aren't outsourced 50-70 seaters.

SWA just announced new hiring.

With the 1 Aug Flight/Duty/Rest rules requiring more pilots, no major changes in the short run. I don't think the ME stuff will keep the oil prices up very high long-term.

HOWEVER, it IS possible that the ME stuff WILL drive the prices WAY up, and they'll stay there for a while....then maybe airlines like Spirit or BA will furlough.

My guess would be there is quite a difference in fuel efficiency between motors on the -9 and the -90.

-90s are far more fuel efficient than the -9s and have more seats.

No it will be the US East because they will open satellite bases in PHL, DCA and CLT for west crews and drive the number of eligible voters on a contract down to the point where NIC is voted in by a "west/sane east alliance" majority. Once the 1st contract is ratified USAPA can go back and play irrelevant big union boss with themselves.

The MD-90's (160 seats) have the same V2500 engine as JB's A320s and the airframe is paid for. In fact the cost of 3 of those planes equals 1 new 737. Tough to beat those numbers.....

Ok, I bought fuel 2 nights ago for $3.29-- today I can't find it for under $3.49--- a 20 cent jump in just 2 days, incredible!!! Three weeks ago it was under $3.00/gallon... And the stock market climbs 200+ points today, what gives? The last crash was led by the increase in fuel costs... After today, I think I'm parking my 401K...

Cheapest gas in the Aloha state today was over $3.70 a gallon, up about $0.05 cents every night. I believe it will hit over $4 before there is any kind of reversal. I guess the best that can happen is a little stability to the Middle East.
