Once the industry's 'ugly girl,' US Airways now doing OK on its own

By Ben Mutzabaugh, USA TODAY
So much for US Airways being the "ugly girl" of the airline industry. At least that's the angle of a story in today's Wall Street Journal, where reporter Susan Carey notes it was just two months ago that Continental CEO Jeff Smisek -- speaking about his airline's proposed merger with United -- somewhat dismissively likened US Airways to being the "ugly girl" of the industry.
Many industry observers and Wall Street analysts seemed to share that opinion at the time, wondering out loud about US Airways' survival prospects if it could not find a merger partner.
FROM THE ARCHIVES: Continental CEO sorry for likening US Airways to 'ugly girl' (May 5, 2010)
Today, however, that thinking seems to have changed. Carey writes that since the "ugly girl" comment was made, "US Airways shares have rallied, and the carrier is expected to return to profit this year."
Carey adds that "for an airline that some investors and analysts pronounced in deep trouble two months ago, US Airways is displaying many signs of health. As the economic recovery lifts the industry's fortunes, US Airways stock has risen 79% this year, sharply outperforming its rivals."
The turnaround appears to be strong enough that US Airways has even backed away from its once-aggressive pursuit of a merger and now says it is just fine as a stand-alone carrier. While US Airways CEO Doug Parker acknowledges to the Journal that he wishes his attempt to merge United succeeded, he also thinks his airline has a bright future on its own.
And, perhaps disquieting some speculation about the carrier's future, Carey cites unnamed sources in saying US Airways is not currently pursuing a tie-up with AA. Additionally, Carey adds "nor is American's global marketing club, Oneworld, trying to lure US Airways into joining and vacating its perch in the rival Star Alliance, which also includes United and Continental."

True-

Now will the east abandon their losing battle and accept some much needed contractual gains?

That is a really relevant question for the rest of us-
or are they willing to keep flying at subVA wages and drag this thing out for even more years....?

Don't you love how some southwest junior puke has the balls to call anyone else's wages sub?
10 years ago junior when you were paying to work at gulfstream, they were one of the lowest paid, and you STILL had to buy your job.

Damn I could really go for some good news right about now.

Good news Usair people.....

That is if you trust Doogie "Drunkie" Parker.....His lips are moving!!:p

Me thinks he's doing all he can to shine up the place for sale.....he's been watching "Flip my Airline" on Bravo.

How could there NOT be recalls coming up.... we are right in the middle of EAST retirements as forecast by Capt. Chip oh so many years ago...

A 1999 new hire should be approaching severe Captain Lineholdage according to the Chipster's future telling circa the year 2000 of our Lord.

Still pissed your career/life went down the crapper?

And next March they'll be on the skids again.....Parker looking for someone to share his pain.

LOL...........its been the same story from that place since 1998.....an ugly merry go around full of fat chicks and old ladies.

Here's some: The West was denied an "en banc" review by the 9th circuit of USAPA's victory over them in its appeal. The good news? I dunno, but maybe, just maybe, we are closer to the day when they stop wasting everyone's time with trying to cash in on the fatally flawed Nicolau "award." As the courts have said, no contract containing that abortion is ratifiable....so let's get on with it.

The East is wasting everyone's time because they fail to live up to there agreements. Dont turn your back on them.

News flash dip********************. Your side wanted arbitration, and chose the arbitrator.
Congrats on being the bottom feeding airline in the industry.....Usapa must be proud!

We wanted fair arbitration, no slanted, biased rulings from a senile arbitraitor. That's the problem with you ALPA minions, you gleefully walk all over your brothers like at NWA yet chastise us for trying to stick up for ourselves. If you were in our shoes you would be doing the same thing as USAPA did!

You got a very fair arbitration.

The arbitrator is still a very well regarded professional.

It's very telling that easties routinely attempt to paint him as senile. You are projecting your own insanity at him.

No-one on the outside shares your view that the award was "slanted" not even your chosen pilot neutral.

Fairness in your eyes is a furloughed east pilot being placed senior to a line holding west captain. Weak and ineffective conditions and restrictions nonwithdstanding, this is an attempted windfall for the east pilots.

In your eyes anything short of a windfall is an "unfair" award.

ANything not respecting DOH is a windfall for one side!

DOH certainly would be a windfall for the east.

It would place pilots who had been on the street for years prior to the merger senior to west captains.

You believe this is justified, but you are in a very small club.
