An American Airlines plane crashed and broke in two after landing at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to local reports. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Details were not immediately available, however, passengers on the plane told local media that flight 331 had just arrived from Miami in pouring rain when the accident occurred. The flight apparently originated in Washington, D.C.

An airport official said the plane overshot the runway and persons are being evacuated, with some sent to hospital.

"The plane crashed and broke almost in front of me," said a shaken Naomi Palmer who was seated at seat number D8.

Palmer said she was feeling some pain and was being supported by a friend on the outside of the arrival area when she spoke with the Observer.

Emergency vehicles sirens could be heard in the background as she spoke via cellphone.

MIAMI — An American Airlines spokesman says a flight from Miami has overshot the runway in Kingston, Jamaica, but came to a safe stop. He says there are no reports of injuries or fatalities.

Charley Wilson says all passengers are off Flight 331. It took off from Miami International Airport Tuesday evening. He says it was almost a full flight. He says normally a flight carries 140 passengers plus the crew.

He says more information was not available.

FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown says the plane was a Boeing 737.

Even though CNN said the plane was in 3 pieces, google said a few minutes ago the plane did not break up but was damaged. I think I believe the latter. You don't have just injuries with an aircraft in 3 pieces. Sounds like they had an overrun and ended up on the beach. Bit of a rough ride going over the rocks at the east end however if they landed east.

They landed on rwy 12. Pretty much only water on both ends. The end they went off of was the better of the two. It sounds like they went over a road and stopped on the beach.

Here is a pic of the runway. They went off the end that is to the left of the pic.
