ATP at $50k + college degree= ??

Have you seen how much college has increased in te last 10 years?
I bet that's how parents making $60k put kids through college- it was a tenth of the cost(!) UC's are going up 19% this year- and 15% next or are you going to say you don't need a degree -

a social worker career is still better than mcdonald's-
think education is expensive - try ignorance- remember- it's not only about dollars- educated people tend to be MUCH more responsible-
the point is still not great as even an average job at A regional will net you six figures -

$53,300 for the first year. Flight costs vary but it says the first 3 years there should cost about $40,000 just for flight. Just the tuition and fees for non-flight students is $28,600 per year. So to do it the tradition four year way this would cost well over 100K.

When I went I transferred in with prior college credits I know it was well under $20,000 per year with room and board. The private, instrument, commercial, and multi was $23,000. I couldn't imagine going there now, but do not regret going there back then. Also, first year regional pay has basically remained unchanged for the last 8-9 years. $20,000 was easier to swallow in 2000 as opposed to now. The parents have to have the money in the bank and be paying for anyone to justify going to ERAU now and in reality you are better to just go somewhere else and have your parents put the money saved into a rainy day bank account for you.

This career is almost turning into something like local judges and senators/presidents where you see the person that wants the position spend $100's of thousands of dollars for a job that pays under $200K. It, like politics will only be for the ultra rich. How many of us observe a captain or FO that are clearly spending much more than you know they make monthly and they don't appear to care? The money is being made or coming from somewhere like the wife, parents, or inheritance.

Also in their fine print is an estimated additional 4 grand for check ride expenses in additional to the "Regional Jet Standards Certification" program. And whatever additional programs I'm sure they try and get students to enroll in as a supposed replacement for college.

Lol- it doesn't come with a degree- and with college costs skyrocketing along with aviation- (btw- ATP used to be well under $30k for everything)- I still challenge you to find a way to get it done for less than $75k

I'll admit that I had it better than this generation- therefore it's much easier to be "personally responsible"

In case you actually are a professional pilot with 11000 hours and a 737 rating, I'd be amazed without drugs if you "lol" when some other tool goes to the likes of ATP and undercuts your job toting a guppy killer sticker flying for an airline like Republic at $30 an hour. If I'm a 3 watt light bulb, then you're the flashing led light on those fluffy flashing crew luggage wheels.

As far as the career is concerned, you can also fly an airplane with the following but I wouldn't recommend doing it:

-Facial tattoo
-facial piercings
-2 DUI's
-a manslaughter conviction
-being a member of the Crips in good standing
-refusal to wear a neck tie.

It doesn't. I encourage people to get one though. In fact, I was hired at all my flying jobs with only an Associate Degree. When I flew corporate, it even helped me get a job because the flight department chief pilot was "old school" and didn't have a degree. He liked that no one below him had more qualifications than he did. That was a rarity but it was kinda humorous. I finally did finish my BS this last summer. It took me nine years but I did it. I they call people doctors that take that long to finish their college. Just for info, my flight school/college went like this:

Private Cert. - 1999
Community College - 1999-2002
Instrument - 2001
Commercial - 2002
Multi - 2002
CFII/MEI - 2003
ATP - 2007
Bachelors Degree - 2006-2009

I would suggest going to a very good community college then transfer to a 4 year school. I have only 12000 college debt and no flight school debt. It can be done, it's heartbreaking and tough but eventually it'll happen. I just can't believe people go into so much debt. My mother always used to say, "where there's a will, there's a way..."
