The ALPA assessment at ASA has caused over 300 pilots to go into bad standing. ALPA is threatening to have these pilots fired by the end of August. The problem is, the accounting is all dorked up and the amounts are wrong. In addition, ALPA doesn't even have up to date records on who owes the assessment. Pilots on military leave, medical leave, and even pilots who left the company have received the letters.

Can you imagine the PR when ALPA tries to fire hundreds of it's own members....It's no wonder Skywest doesn't want ALPA....

Amen, that was a car wreck looking for a place to happen.

They'd never do it. They're going to cling to every dollar of dues money they can. The incompetence the MEC has displayed that pilots who separated from the company 6 months before a pilot was furloughed should be a wake up call for the pilots to get their house in order.

How can the union fire anyone?

Unfortunately, we have Agency Shop in our contract that I helped negotiate back in 1998. That was a mistake and I contributed to it. It allows ALPA to have members fired if they don't pay up. Ironically, the pilot who received the biggest portion of the retro pay isn't covered by this and doesn't have to pay.

Ironically, the union can have the member fired...but the member can't do the same if he/she isn't happy...In essence, ALPA doesn't work for us, we work for them....

I have a copy of a letter that a pilot, who separated 12 months before the furloughs, received regarding bad standing....They aren't even close to getting it right.

If true, that's not right.

He went to SWA in June of 2008 and was in my ASA newhire class...He showed me the letter when I was at his house. He asked me what to do about....I said, just ignore it.

ALPA is a cancer that just won't go away. It keeps growing and devouring until it kills the entire industry that keeps it going.

Just make sure you have Dues check off done on your ALPA Card, and or website and it takes care of the problem. I also have all assessments payroll deducted. Keep a member in good standing.

Sounds to me like a way around that no furlough clause!

This happened to Eagle back a few years back. They worked out a pay back over 6 months. I think the avarage was $650. Sucks when they can't even get there own accounting right!!

The problem is that ALPA can't do payroll deduct for assessments. Most of these people are on DCO. The other problem is the amounts are not accurate. It's a real mess.

Have you tried looking at your online statements? No wonder ALPA billing is such a mess.

I have a hard time believing that anyone would get fired by the end of August because of this. Sounds like the same kind of "scare" letters you get from credit card companies when your bill is past due. Not to mention the fact that ALPA's bookkeeping is so screwed up it would probably take them 6 months to even bring a case against a pilot. I certainly hope they wouldn't rake anyone over the coals without doing their due diligence first.
