Are they supercharged with turbo neon gas or something? Could you guys maybe hold off on turning those on at night until you get out on the runway and not RIGHT WHEN the controller tells you "position and hold?" We now have permanent flash damage on the rear cockpit bulkhead of N394AA thanks to Jetblue strobe paranoia.

Yeah, I know.... runway safety, the USAir/Skywest LAX deal, etc.... it all makes sense but a little judgment, compromise and common sense go a long way. Such as, when nobody's landing on JFK 31L (only 31R), maybe you could wait till you get lined up? That way, your strobes are still on while on the runway to alert an approaching aircraft's incorrect 31L lineup while respecting the night vision of those
behind you.

Yup, those suckers are hyped up on something. I hold off on killing your night vision until cleared to go, unless i have a special visitor bringing the head count up front to three. Some people just can't be reasoned with....
 
If an airport ever loses their runway end lights, you can just replace them with E-jet strobes.

You ever try sleeping in the back of an E-jet when the window seat won't shut the shade? It's like a nightclub back there.
 
You can always tell when you are following one down an arrival or approach. Hell, you can almost see them in the clouds.
 
At ASA our checklist doesn't have us turn the strobes on til after being cleared for T/O

Incorrect-

Anytime at night of low vis, position and hold-or crossing an active, it is recommended to have the strobes on.

-It really is a good idea-keeps the controller from forgetting there is an aircraft on the runway, and landging traffic will definitely see you as well.

This kind of stuff may be mildly irritating sometimes, but it has and will again save lives.
 
Incorrect sir. We need the strobes on whenever on or crossing an active runway. There's my dork moment for the night...
50% for you sir....we need them on when crossing an active runway .... "with an aircraft in position for takeoff".

But if you'd like to "err" on the side of caution, I'm all for that. :beer:
