United plans 1,200 layoffs in early '09


(Chicago Tribune Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CHICAGO _ Pink slips will be flying soon at United Airlines, which is preparing to lay off about 1,200 workers early next year, the company confirmed Wednesday.

The latest furloughs are among the 7,000 jobs that the Chicago-based carrier earlier said it would eliminate as it reduces its work force to match its shrinking airline operations amid the tough economy. United is in the process of grounding 100 airplanes, about 20 percent of its fleet.


"These are part of the difficult but necessary actions we are taking companywide to enable United to compete in this challenging economic environment," said United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy. Although U.S. carriers are enjoying a temporary retrieve from crushing fuel costs, they are still following through with plans to reduce their flying and retire older planes _ capacity cuts that are the equivalent of one large airline.

"They're still very nervous, as they should be," said Michael Derchin, aviation analyst with FTN Midwest Securities Inc. "They don't have great visibility beyond the next month or two."



Airline executives are grappling with a sudden drop in travel as companies and consumers tighten belts. And many in the aviation industry think that fuel prices will again reach the stratosphere once the global economy recovers.

Reining in costs is an acute concern for United, the nation's third-largest carrier, which has accumulated larger losses through 2008 than many of its peers, analysts said.

United plans to lay off about 700 mechanics as of Jan. 11. Most of the jobs to be eliminated were announced earlier this fall, but deferred until after the busy holiday travel season, sources said.

The carrier plans deep cuts at its hulking San Francisco maintenance base, where about 300 jobs will be eliminated, sources said. About 150 workers will be cut at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, and United is closing repair stations at LaGuardia Airport, Newark International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport.

Leaders of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents United's mechanics, will meet with the airline's senior management on Dec. 11 and 12 to discuss the pending furloughs and contractual restraints on outsourcing work currently performed by United workers, said Leslie Miller, a spokeswoman for the union.

In an October letter to Teamster members warning of the layoffs, David Bourne, director of the union's airline division, vowed to "ensure that the company does not use the upcoming furloughs as an excuse to outsource maintenance work to any third-party vendor."

United also has issued notices that it plans to furlough as many as 490 customer service representatives and ground workers at three airports, including the largest of these cuts at O'Hare. Last month, United sent letters warning of pending job cuts to 253 full-time and part-time employees O'Hare, according to the International Association of Machinists, which represents the workers.

The carrier is also set to lose 387 pilots in January, a source said. That would be the largest exodus of United pilots since the carrier announced it would trim 950 active pilots from its employment rolls in June.
 
The average consumer travels by air for vacation destinations which are strictly discretionary. That should not be more then 15 to 20 percent of your business year around. There is no reason for an airline to expand, hire, and then layoff unless you have done a poor job of managing which is apparent in this industry.
 
God speed to the 387 in January. Hopefully cheap oil will shorten your time away.

Unless they decide not to retire the 737 fleet afterall, I don't see these guys going back for a while. No aircraft replacements in the pipeline and losing almost 20% of your fleet means that oil could go to 10 dollars and you will still have people on the street for a while. Its quite sad, I know a lot of great guys and girls that are going to be affected by this.
 
united has committed to parking the planes, oil could be free and they would still park them-- its been their plan the whole time---

it seems that they have things lines up and wait for external factors to happen then use that to base their decisions--- my furlough letter stated high oil prices--- well now they are almost half what they were when i was hired--- GMAFB-- and cry me a river-----

GMAFB the companies signed thsoe contracts and now they want it back? and cnbc says the workers are overpaid et ? someone neds to inform the anchors that they shoud take a 50% pay cut, lose soem vacation to make their parent company more profitable and see if they like it--- they are absolutey heartless-- everyone of them---- hell one of them said gas going down is like a raise to us common worker so the companies can take more!!!!!! UFB

Strong scope language is needed more than ever. Look what's going on at Midwest.

Well, don't worry, Glenn will go, of course that will be when the CO management takes over the 'combined company' sadly, probably won't be before then. By then it will be a 'shell' of what it used to be, sadly a lot (more) a/c, people and marketshare gone.

The 'morons' on the Board are his boss, they keep him there. why??? duh.

We did until PAUL WHITEFORD sold us down the river and gave the company all the 70's in the bankrupty contract to save the pensions. Great Job Paul...you destroyed a huge leverage piece. Enjoy your junior manning on the 400 you POS...and of course your pension
 
Since United was already hurting, would it really have been that bad for them to announce this AFTER Christmas!?! Classless if you ask me. Best of luck to those of you looking for another job.
 
Sad, sad. I think I is the preplan to keep trimming for the next airline marriage. Others will follow. Sad, sad.
 
Trimming to merge...plus, the 387 is part of the original plan including the 950. They did not do the 950 all at once.

I'll second that...its too bad your need to add your own union to the list of threats to a career.

I just got an E-mail about sending money to help pilots affected by natural disasters, how about a fund for those about to lose everything? the difference is these folks have insuranse and jobs after it is all over, what do we have "0". I balme Alpa FOR THIS AS MUCH AS TITLESS
