DAL/NWA pilots RE: furlough?

Now that the kegs of Kool Aid are nearly beat do you honestly think the party will continue? Most DAL pilots on here seem to think so but what are most line pilots sayn?

Unless the economy really tanks (a big question mark) I would be very surprised if a furlough happens.

All reports continue to be that Delta will be hiring in 2009, pretty big hiring unless the economy tanks and I'm growing food in my front yard.

In the mean time, there is talk of NWA furloughing into Delta new hire slots, but nobody actually hitting the street ... and this talk is hugely speculative.

That it's the end of the world, We're severely under paid (25 year captain at a Major), the industry will never be the same, go do another more respectful career and ummmm..... Oh yeah MESA SUCKS.

Why is everybody at the regionals so afraid of furlough? Is it the in house cool aid to keep the pilots from going to the majors? Or guys who can't get hired anywhere else spread it around?

The truth is I'd rather be furloughed Delta pilot, then a pilot at a regional.
If you have half brains, clean cut and on time tons of rewarding opportunities will open up.

"....to prepare for the incremental staffing required by the implementation of the Delta scheduling and staffing rules. In doing so, we are anticipating awards in both the B747-400 and A330 Captain positions. Both of these positions should experience a steady volume of awards throughout 2009, starting with the January 2009 APA, which will be published later this week. ​

One other key factor that will drive changes in pilot staffing is a planned reduction in scheduled Cargo flying anticipated to go into effect at the conclusion of the 2008 holiday flying period. This reduction is expected to generate displacements from all three 747-200 positions. The impact of these displacements will be minimized if pilots choose to bid to other aircraft types on their own. These displacements may have a small ripple effect of displacements on other fleets. Coupled with the growth in the B744 and A330 CA positions, we will do our best to minimize this ripple effect to the best of our ability through the APA process. ​

Narrowbody positions are likely to see some small positional movement, particularly to the A320 fleet as we attempt to balance the remaining narrowbody surpluses across all three narrowbody fleets. This will be achieved through APA awards and not through displacements. Most importantly, we have no plans to furlough any pilots."

For now, NWA/DAL have a certain momentum going forward, and that should continue into the third quarter 2009. Beyond that,...who knows ?

No problem, i get sick of people posting random BS just trying to stir the pot. If we are ever going to move forward as a single pilot group we must stop trying to cut each others legs off.

The key to no spilling what you got is to not allow yourself to get to wrapped up in all of this stuff. I have way to much time left with this new company to get worked up and spill my cup :beer:

Are you telling me that adoption of DALPA scheduling and staffing rules will lead to advancements due to a need for more 747-400 captains and A330 captains?

Yes there will be an increase in some and a reduction in others based on what Delta decides to do. A big number of the positions opening up on the heavies are coming from retirements also. Either way its good for ALL of us.

First, I wrote that I did not expect NWA pilots to hit the street. If they come over to the MD88 it would be a heck of a pay raise from status quo, so I don't see how that bit of good news for you is "stirring the pot."

It isn't random, nor is it BS. I would guess that Occam, ACL65 and FDJ2 could chime in and confirm.

• NWA solicited (soliciting) early outs
• NWA parking 47 airplanes in 08
• Delta growing in 08 and early 09
• NWA canceled displacements at the same time Delta canceled hiring
• Delta management and ALPA just agreed to raise the MD88 flying limits, in effect to hold slots open for ....

and one glaring absence - what about the DC9 fleet?

and I wrote that no NWA pilots were expected to hit the street. But, the flying slots are on the Delta side of the house. My opinion is that some system by which NWA pilots come over before SOC will happen.

How is it that you think that NWA parks 47 airplanes in one year, yet nobody is displaced? Delta staffing rules? You mean the rules we just waived on the MD88?

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the NWA pilot list has shrunk as well. In 2005 NWA had over 6000 pilots on the list. Now we may be under 5000. On top of that, Only 190 people have been hired in 8 years. Surpluses have to do with the fact that people need to be shifted to other categories, not meaning over staffing across the board. The companies staffing updates indicates that some categories have surpluses while others may not. They have said on a number of occasions that people are bidding out of the "surplus" categories into other aircraft thus offsetting the need to displace people to other aircraft.

My opinion, I wish the story was different because it complicates matters that are already complicated enough and I'm likely to be displaced from status quo by the time this all shakes out. After all if a DC9 FO is quasi-displaced to an MD88, then they actually have a better job than a more senior DC9 FO. IMHO it would be better if they at least wait until the SLI and allow bidding across certificates ... and that might end up being the answer.

Who's my source? Also those who want to retire will retire regardless of what the company "allows". They may not get an early out package but they can still retire. The reason why they aren't allowing as many PERPS as are applying is because of the training bubble and potential for being short staffed. We really don't have an overall "surplus", what we have is a time of staffing uncertainty. As the DCC gets closer more and more will start retiring on their own without a PERP. There are so many variables on staffing its probably got HR's heads spinning. We'll see.

Were not furloughing but were also not hiring because NWA was looking to furlough and we were going to train those guys. Source? Just an instructor who drinks beer with those on the 4th floor. Is is true? I wouldn't bet my house on it. Just wanted to add some fuel to the fire.

That's funny. I heard from a guy DAL is retiring all those really old 767s and are going to furlough starting 6 January. I hope we can find room for their butts in the NWA fleet.
