vacation bid out and by mid-november the company will be down to 65 captains and 60 F/O's to man 9 B717's. 125 total pilots with around 275 on the street, who knows how man F/A's are getting axed among many other departements. its just a crying shame!

The Republic pilots don't think it's a crying shame. They're excited about it. What are the NWA pilots and Delta pilots doing about this? Absolutely nothing. Nobody cares until it affects himself/herself. I'm truly sorry for you guys, but I guarantee the majority of pilots in this industry could care less if Midwest goes out of business.

So what is being said within the MEH pilot group? Is there any way to fight this? Is there talk of shutting the place down?

14 pilots per aircraft. Seems like alot of pilots per aircraft. Especially for an airline that has never really had high aircraft utilization rates.

Goes well with 88 seats in a 717. Sorry, 99. Timmay was hot on it to fix that problem, 28 airplanes later.


I said to Rankin back in 2003 or 4 during some PIC class that we need more seats. But what does a stupid regional punk know. Guess dumping 28 airplanes was a better idea. My bad.

WASHINGTON,, Sept 11, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l (ALPA) has allocated $2 million to support the Midwest Airlines pilots' fight to protect their jobs as they begin contract negotiations with an increasingly adversarial management.
In its September 10th resolution, ALPA's Executive Board authorized the amount from the Association's Major Contingency Fund (MCF) for "strategic planning and communications programs in support of the [Midwest pilots'] contract enforcement and negotiating activities." ALPA's MCF, the union's "war chest," provides pilot groups the necessary resources to respond to threats to their jobs and to the piloting profession.
"The airline's plan to outsource Midwest pilots' jobs is the latest example of management's systematic efforts to dismantle our airline," said Capt. Jay Schnedorf, chairman of the Midwest pilots' Master Executive Council (MEC). "Midwest pilots will not shrink from this fight. With ALPA's financial support and the backing of all 53,000 ALPA pilots, we stand ready to fully engage in the fight to protect our jobs, and hold management accountable for its contractual obligations to this pilot group."
The Midwest pilots' contract became amendable on August 31, 2008. They negotiated their first contract in February 2000, and three years later, provided millions in concessions to help save their airline from bankruptcy. Over the past four months, as the pilots prepared to address their contractual concerns through the negotiations process under the Railway Labor Act called "Section 6," management again demanded outrageous concessions from the pilots. Most recently, Midwest announced that, in addition to its parking of all the MD-80 aircraft, it would now replace all but nine B-717s with smaller EMB 170s and outsource that flying to pilots from another airline as part of a deal with Republic Airways Holdings.

We hope not. The opinion of the RAH pilots I have spoken to about this is overwhelmingly negative.

This makes me want to take a shower.

We have not been given any definitive guidance from our union as of yet. This was a complete ambush. We learned about it when it was released to the press. Word from our union is that we are checking the legality and communicating with the MEH MEC, but the companies achieved tactical surprise and time is short.

If it turns out to be a legal (if ugly) move, the RAH pilots will have the choice of flying it, quitting or getting fired. In a perfect world we would all fall on our swords to uphold the principle, but in all honesty I don't think that would happen at any airline.

Now, if there were to be a picket line, that would open up all kinds of options as far as a cooperative counter to this would be concerned.

It'll be the "New" Midwest Express.
Remember the "New" Eastern.

Yeah, I know that MidEx is not on strike, but that's a SCAB move by RAH pilots if they do it.

Trust me, the tone on our internal message board is less than excited. In fact, very few people are happy about this (No, I'm not one of them).

Midwest flying should be done by Midwest pilots. If they kept all their 717's and had an RFP...well that's a different story.

I'll say it once more. You can bet the farm and you'd lose, because we're not happy about it either. Best of luck to the MEH guys

Like it was said before, we fly it or you fired, or quit...the company keeps the Union in the Dark after several request for all info in this disgusting:puke: deal...but ofcourse is just easer to call a PILOT group the S word.

I guess you didn't talk to any of the junior pilots who were on the verge of furlough or any of the captains about to be downgraded that are hoping to stay in the left seat. I have, and I have not heard a negative thing yet about this from a Republic pilot.


Tim wanted the Midwest pilots to work for $87/hour as a captain and $37/hour as a first officer. ALPA refused. Now he is bringing in pilots that are already proven to work that cheap happily. If the Midwest pilots do get those jobs back in a year, it will not be anywhere near current Midwest rates. This is a sad situation that will extend to other companies if it works.
 
I don't get why all of you think this has everything to do with the unions. It has nothing to do with the unions. Most airlines wouldn't can 76 percent of its fleet to prove a point. TPG just wants to lose the least amount of its investment. They put in more money, but it wasn't for a replacement for the 80. Republic put in money because NW wouldn't. For RAH, the shareholders just want those planes flying, making money, and giving a return on their investment. This boat just needs to float until the DL/NWA merger is approved. After that will likely be the end of Midwest.

So they can 'talk' of selling/leasing/transferring, doesn't mean that the plan. Every other carrier Midwest's size/service is gone. Long gone. What makes anyone think this will be any different?

The end game is that it will secure RAH flying for DL after the merger. RAH is just the cheapest gate keeper for MKE.

Guys, relax, both the Midwest MEC and the Republic union are talking and are on the same page, the RAH teamsters is totally in support of our fight and our mec is very pleased with the communication between the two unions.

We all have to stay unified, we are all pilots and in this mess together.

And again, please stop using the S word.
