NetJets Smoking Question

I am considering applying to NetJets and hear nothing but positives. I did see on the company website that client smoking is allowed. Has anyone experienced this and if so, how much does it bother you? Thanks

It's been my experience that most of our owners do not smoke. Only a few do, and out of those, a very very very small handful actually smoke real bad. We do have smokeless ashtrays onboard and it helps some. Usually after a flight like that, the aircraft get professionally cleaned if they stink. Again, its been rare for me to have a problem and I don't smoke.

Do the "smokeless ashtrays" (when onboard apparently) protect you from the unsupervised smoker/drinker who falls asleep while smoking? I'm surprised you guys didn't get that banned when negotiating your contract... The "very few" you claim to have witnessed doesn't negate the fact that it is part of the job...a dangerous one at that...and shouldn't be downplayed. (The excessive customer service, excessive days away that doesn't improve with seniority, and aircraft appearance responsibilities, are already downplayed enough on the forum in addition to exaggerations of positives).
For every "positive" exaggerated, there is an equal or greater negative left untold.

I don't know how old you are but a few years ago you could smoke on airliners. Pretty sure planes weren't falling out of the sky due to fallen cigarettes and stray ashes.

Owners own the plane while they're on it and if they want to smoke, procreate, drink, masterbate... whatever, they can have at it as long as it doesn't interfere with safety. Some guys can't stand the smell of smoke and they don O2 when an owner lights up. Once the owner leaves if the cabin is trashed and stinky have it professionally detailed.

For the record I smoke and nothing tastes better than a cold beer and harsh Marlboro while at 450.

I hear ya... but more long term damage is being done to you from high altitude UV than exposure to secondary smoke a few times a years... unless of course your second job is a piano player in a New Orleans whorehouse.

I disagree 100%. Some of our owners use us for the reason that they CAN have a smoke. It is THEIR airplane. Would you tell them they can't smoke in their own house??? Of course not!

This is cliche`, but if you don't like it I heard SWA is hiring. It is part of the job here.

True. In this case, however, the Owner has already bought and paid for the very thing you are trying to debate.

Smoking is allowed. MOST (99.6%) of the Owners don't smoke because they are well-educated people and they have read about the effects of smoking.

I have had someone smoke in the plane 5 times in 6 years. I guess I'm due for another soon.

It's really no big deal though once you get through the initial surprise of flying along and smelling the 1st puff of smoke.

i think if you held a survey of all the owners the amount of owners in favor in banning smoking on planes for their own personal comfort would far outweigh a few owners that smoke.

When owners smoke they not only put the crew in a health danger, but they also at times make the plane unsuitable for use shortly after the owners depart the plane.

It has been shown through various studies that restaurants and apartment buildings who don't allow smoking have a significant higher goods sold and a higher selling price.

Come on man. That is ridiculous. I've been here almost 4 years and in that time I have had less than a handful of smokers. That is not a health danger.

Plus if you are THAT offended by it, put on the mask, or go to a 121 carrier where it is prohibited.

I didn't realize you were an MD. Must be tough doing all those transplants and fly those 7 day trips.

We have a lot of crews here that pride themselves on the marathons they run and the workouts they do. (i'm not one of them )

I don't care what they do because I do a lot of worse stuff to my body, but I'm not going to poo poo their healthy lifestyle or health concerns that they might have from 2nd hand smoke.

I guess it may not be that bad if you do not happen to be allergic. I probably have used about 30 sick days due to smoking flights... over 9 years.

I finally got on 2 allergy meds which cost me about $65/mo co-pay... and took shots every couple of weeks for 3 years... which has reduced the incidence of actually having to DNIF. But I still feel bad after exposure to smoke.

If you don't like the smoke, there is nothing stopping you from finding a different job where you won't encounter that type of health risk. God knows there are 100 people ready and willing to take your place that won't mind it.

Hopefully we are only a few months away from a more LABOR-friendly administration (not in the pocket of big-tobacco) who will see the injustice that flight-crews are one of the only groups not guaranteed a Smoke-free work environment.

Here is one of the major processes that cause lung cancer.

It was mentioned that a higher health risk exists because of the time one spends at high altitude. There is exposure to higher radiation levels.

Yes there is more radiation but the radiation mostly passes through you with no effect. HOWEVER if you are a smoker or have smoke or other particulates in the lungs...

Radiation particles adhere to the smoke particulates in the air and the lungs. The smoke particulates then stick to mucus in the lungs -- with the potentially dangerous radiation particles. If not for the smoke you exposure to these particles lasts only as long as the flight. Not so if you exposed to both smoke and radiation.

When these particles stuck in your mucus decay ... hours or days later ... you risk the cause of a cancer in the lungs.

This is the same reason living in a home with high levels of RADON gas can cause lung cancer ... but mostly only to people who smoke or work in very dusty conditions like a coal mine.
