Most of the postings I have read regarding the working conditions at Southern Air are from last year. Can anyone give me an update on the pros and cons of working there..ie. average reserve time?schedule? how long IOE is? etc..any information would be appreciated.

your guess is as good as everyone elses. no one knows anything right now how QOL or schudule is going to be like, after both companys combine in Jan then ask again..

sorry,
pilotbrain

Currently:

You have to sign a $24,000 training bond before you start training.

You get no deadhead/positioning pay in your first year. A sure guarantee that you will be used and abused.

If you get fired "for cause", you owe the $24,000. Guess who gets to decide if it's for cause........wait for it.......yes, Southern Air. Oh, and the discipline/discharge section of the contract doesn't apply to probationary crewmembers.

If Southern Air furloughs you, you accept a new job with a real airline and Southern recalls you six months later...................you owe the $24,000 should you decide not to return.

Southern used to be a good job if you were unemployed. Now it's a good job only if you are UNEMPLOYABLE.

A LOT is changing right now, to be honest, if you wait a little bit you will probably get better information than relying on whatever anyone tells you right now.

Best I can say is that it looks like things are moving in a positive direction. When the info is made public, then I promise to post it on here.

Southern Air is what you make of it. It depends on where you are coming from. If you want to build time and see new places it is not so bad. I have not been used and abused. I am going to upgrade next month which is only one year. Not to bad. Training bond sucks for sure. Not a good deal unless you have no other options. Things are in limbo right now with the merger. No hard details right now. Should be coming soon. There is no reserve time though. You will get a line right after OE. It might not be a good one, but it is flying. I think tht it is going to get better here. I have been wrong before though. Good luck what ever you decide.

I've seen a lot of your planes and I have always wondered about where you fly etc. Can you give me an example of a line for a month--where you would go etc? Give me a typical line or something you have done recently. Thanks a lot.

Bye Bye--General Lee

Most of what SAI does involves taxiing the acft. Taxi out for T.O.....Uh oh, got a mx problem. Taxi back to chalks.

Did somebody at Southern pee in your cornflakes...?

Been there over two years, had only one return to the gate.

Not calling Southern a Shangri-la, but it's not as bad as you enjoy making it sound.

It's non-sched international freight operation running under supplemental rules... WTF do you expect it to be like...?

Most of your complaints about Southern sound as out of place, as would a corporate pilot complaining about having to be "on call"...

It's the nature of the job. Southern + cargo flying in general is not for everyone, but it suits some people just fine.

Now that we have established that you really don't like this company, can we stick to writing information that is useful (to those who might prefer it over sitting in some crash pad or are stuck flying a barbie jet)...?

Thanks

Hey, really sorry guys! Didn't realize someone would be so personally offended!

New rule, never post on a BB after drinking two scotches.

Anyway, it was meant to be humorous. Not a stab at SAI. Have a lot of friends who work there. Thats where my info comes from.

But I have to ask dakotaHC8, looking at some of your previous post, are you a chick? Or do you just act like one?

Another scumbag freight operator that has to indenture their aircrews with a training bond in order to keep them from bolting to the door when they find the real score on the outfit.

Sorry, but I really disagree with some of what has been said here. Most of the guys who say Southern is an okay "non-sked" operation were hired long before the training bond was introduced. If you are desparate to get away from the crash pad or the barbie jet and fly the jumbo, THERE ARE MANY BETTER PLACES TO GO THESE DAYS......WITHOUT BECOMING AN INDENTURED SERVANT!!

I think Kalitta, with their new contract, is a much better place than Southern. Really, any place without the bond is a better career move.

Why, you hard up for a date or something...?

You should try that Eharmony site (that they advertise on TV all of the time). You can find the whiny primadona that is most alike, and compatible with your personality.

But thanks anyways for all of your secondhand + heresay info... Stuff like that is what makes internet boards what they are, instead of what they could be.

Now, you mind if we get back to talking about Southern, instead of your love life...?

I had a friend that wanted to come to 360, i told him that sai was the place to interview. He interviewed there in the past week and ask about the training bond and was told there wasn't one anymore..

The class that started in MIA just over three weeks ago was forced to sign the bond. Maybe the situation is changing because they were only able to fill half the seats in that class.

Has anyone else interviewed in the past week?

I talked to a buddy of mine who works at Omni. He said they have lost 4 FE's in the past month to SAI because of a $5000 signing bonus????
I don't know about the training bond but I think everyone who gets employed at SAI before March of next year will get a $5000 bonus. This is due to C360 Crews who go to SAI will get a $5000 FO/FE and $10,000 Captains.

I spoke to a good friend of mine at SAI, pilot that are on property at SAI at the time of the merger will revive $5000 fo/fe and 10000 capt. but the date was closed on Oct 1st. but he said there pay has come up to ours at 360 , but only though that are hired by march 2008. Then new hires revert back to SAI pay. The real questions is what the hell is the schedule going to be like???????????

Dutch,

Have you recived your letter of employment from sai?
i heard that it was coming this week???

Yes, all Cargo 360 crews received letters of conditional employment. Right now there are two battles. One is about the seniority list -Using SAI rules on seniority (Date of Class Start) instead of C360 rules on seniority (Date of Hire) on crewmembers at C360 less than a year. The other battle is all of our reservist don't like the language about reserve drill in the SACG contract. They say its (and it is) illegal.
Other than that, no real surprises. We have till the 19th to accept or decline.

I fail to understand why any of the C360 pilots were given anything other than the first day of class as your hire date...

To have some from C360 list their date of hire based upon your inteview date is bad enough..., Let alone half of your pilots one way, and the other half by 1st class date.

I have never heard of any other airline utilizing a "date of interview" or "date of offer" as the DOH, ever... Are there any other examples of this...?
