Foxcow, Saluki was referring to ATR's famed(if not overblown) lawn dart reputation when in iciing...

If you fly any airplane in severe icing conditions for 20 minutes with your flaps down, below the recommended icing speed, and not turn on the airframe deice for the first 5 minutes... of course it will turn into a lawn dart when you lose it and attempt a 3 G pullout at 125kts above VMO.

Definitely an overblown reputation. Especially, when you consider the mistakes made and the modifications that have been made since.

I would have given anythng to fly the ATR out of SJU for Eagle, unfortunatly the only aircraft available in the class was the EMB. The ATR is a fantastic airplane.
And Saluki the reason why they keep them at the lower altitudes is because they are turboprops. What is the problem you see with the ATR?

Kids--

he didn't say ALTITUDES he said LATITUDES

those lines on a globe?

at not so subtle reference to ATR icing and Roselawn, IL.

for those of you who have not been in aviation more than a minute

"It's those changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
With all of our running and all of our cunning,
If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane."

the ATR made major modifications after the American Eagle accident from what I read. The de-ice boots were totally redesigned, and placed further back along the leading edge. Mountain Air Cargo and other Fedex Feeders fly them into northern states all the time, although mostly we've gone to aiports in latin america and south america with them. It's a great airplane either way. burns a heck of a lot less fuel than the Dash 8-400.
