I thought AlPA has a big push to wear the uniform, the whole uniform, hat included, and be proud. So I dug out my hat when we started contract talks last January and have been wearing it since. But at the Alaska rally in ANC the video shoes Capt. Prater walking around without his. What gives?

Dosn't Alaska Airlines still require the hat? I know that CAL doesn't reuiqre hats with the summer uniform, that's probably why he wasn't wearing his. 73

Wear that pizza parlor hat. I don't think so. Oh, and yes, you do look funny wearing it.

I think he should have worn it anyway. Plenty of CAL guys wear it in the Summer and I think that if you are ALPA President and get all the perks involved, you should have to adhear to the most strict uniform policy of the airlines you represent.

Prater? You mean you don't know?

He's a self-serving hypocrite.

Yeah, what he said. :)

Seriously though, he lost his hat a couple of months ago while jumpseating and still hasn't gotten a new one. He usually borrows another CAL pilot's hat if another CAL guy is at the picketing event, but I guess he was the only CAL pilot at this one.

From ALPA HQ policy:

17.21.a.2

"Representatives have the option of:

1) Wearing the hat associated with their respective airline, or;

2) A moustache may be substituted provided that it is of a size equal to, or greater than, that of the hat in section 17.21.a.2.1 ".

May be a big Alaskan bird pooped on his hat?

I imagine it would be less damaging in eyes of the public and the press to not wear one in such case as opposed to wearing it.

Airline pilot uniforms suck, it's not the 1920's anymore, you don't need to associate the "captain" of the airplane with a captain of a ship anymore to give it legitimacy "Arrr maties". Epaulets with stripes are freaking dumb too, "Hey everybody, I'm in charge because I have four stripes". I'm all for khaki's and collared shirts in winter and shorts and collared shirts in summer with flip-flops; maybe add a ball-cap if one is so inclined. And if you need to assert your authority, you can have "Captain" embroidered over the left breast. Who gives a poop if you look professional, nobody ever sees you doing your job and rarely sees you in the cockpit. The only time people see you is when you are walking through the airport, and even then your uniform looks like sh!t because you've been flying all day and people think you don't care about your appearance because as far as they know, you just showed up from home.

Let me guess: regional FO?

nope, just an observer. The ones who really stand out are the young dudes who fly for the regionals and their uniforms look just like they left it wadded up on the floor the previous night. Second to those are the old dudes walking around with a big old beer belly and a hat on. It looks rediculous. It used to be customary in society to not wear a hat indoors. You folks b!tch about people asking you questions about their flights or gate, but you sit around in these uniforms that stick out like a sore thumb. What do you expect? Not to mention that the uniform style has been copied by bus drivers, skycaps, etc....

Also, the uniforms just look cheap, i.e. the materials look low quality. That doesn't do it any good for the appearance of professionalism.

The uniform looks great when properly worn. That means shining the shoes, pressing the pants and jacket, ironing the shirt, keeping the tie tightened up, and wearing the danged hat. This isn't complicated, people. Looks like a professional if you expect to be treated as one.

Very humorous indeed!

Don't forget the old saying: "If you wear a name tag at work, chances are the company won't shut down without you."

-Blucher;)

PS-Pipe, that was fantastic! The laugh was greatly appreciated.

Airline Pilot uniforms are dorky.Who else wears short sleeves and ties with name tags? Does Fast food and Wal-mart come to mind. They should take a cue from the military. Summer goes short sleeves and no tie, winter equal long sleeves and tie..simple.

However nothing burns my but like seeing these riddle kids with their doc martin/skechers shoes with gold laces and waffle sole kiss boots augmented with sideburns down to their chins. Are they trying to look professional or cool? Thank god for no beards or they would have goats and soul patches. I wouldn't let these D!ck wads go out with my daughter, let alone fly my family around the country!

I'll look like a professional when I get the pay and work rules of a professional.

Is that what you told the interviewer when you were trying to get your job and were probably dressed up in your best suit?

And how is that mexican stand off working for you.... Management laughs at clowns that think like this.... cause your in thier office throwing down this type of ultimatum.....

In addition, if you did get paid more money you'd dress nice for a short time... then you'd come up with a new flavor-of-the-month reason to be unprofessional.... And this is simply because... you are not professional.

Professionalism is personal choice. Professionals aren't a by-product of an organizational culture. They are hired. Some non-professionals slip thru the cracks. No one can do for you what your mama never did......

What do you wear in the sim when you go in for your checkride?

Do you wear a uni and your hat?

Doubt it. Are you unprofessional when you fly your checkrides because you don't have on a uni and hat?

What you are wearing (as opposed to how you wear whatever it is you wear) has nothing to do with professionalism.

How you fly, treat your crew, and handle situations is how you show your professionalism. What you wear has little to nothing to do with it.

Most of my flights are done in jeans and a polo shirt, and I can assure you that I conduct my flights in a very professional manner.

Nailed it.

its too bad so many people are superficial. being professional means ACTING professional no matter what you are wearing. Just because you put on something to wear does NOT in no way mean you are professional. If looks are everything to you then you are in the wrong business. The days of being a pilot just to walk through the terminal and get all the looks are over. Its not glamorous because the pay and respect by the airlines gets lower and lower each day

Well, that should propel this thread for a few more pages. I see Rez is already on it. Either this place has become too predictable, or I'm wasting too much of my life on here. I wonder... :)

I started a huge anti hat thread on the APA message board and pretty much got my nuts handed over to me by the hard core Sky Nazis. I agree with the original poster, hats are outdated and don't do much to enhance a pilot's professional look. Nostalgic, definitely. But way out of style.

All the world's a stage...

To many of us, perhaps, but not to the "audience". Like it or not, part of our job is show business, and the actors don't get to design the costumes. If we made a list of things that management should change, hat policy would be pretty far down. :pimp:

Nailed it. Pax don't have access to our training records. All they have is what they see.....

If you want to blend in with the FA's and gate agents who also wear shoulder boards then go ahead and tell others you are part of the 3% Klub and not some San Fran Frannie Fanny....

The Hat is the only indicator that distinguishes Pilots from other airport employees (Skycaps are trying to gain creditibility  )

So as management continues to group us together with the aircraft cleaners in terms of pay and respect.... go ahead... chuck our image with it...

It is not about YOU! It is about how you are perceived by others. If the REVENUE thinks that being a pilot is the same skill as aircraft cleaners and we asisst with the image then we will be exactly that...

No one cares about Air Line Pilots except Air Line Pilots.

And no one really cares about you and your family..except your familiy. Does that mean when you go out to a family dinner looking like trailer trash? No. You clean up and wear a collar. You treat people with respect and with civilty. Dress code is a part of the total image.

But wait.... pay pilots 300K a year and they will dandy prance the terminals like Capt. Jack Sparrow..... which says that most pilots self respect comes from how others treat and pay them..... not what they think of themselves....

We are screwed..........
