Professional pilots sound like student pilots when they use "with you" in their initial transmissions to ATC. Here's a clue -- ATC knows you are "with them" by the fact you are talking to them! It's redundant and a waste of radio time....especially the stupid "checking in with you". Try dropping the "with you" crap and sound a bit more professional and like you've flown in other parts of the world. Next time you hear "with you" consider how stupid it sounds....and is. It's just a bad habit.

Also...drop the "Any chance..." when what you really meant to do is request something. i.e. "Comair 123 requesting direct xyz".

Actually I am. My F/Os laugh at all the stupid stuff I point out that people do and most of them say they never thought of it ..........and that I was right.

What's the problem?

I know the type. The captain that points out of this small sh!t and the polite FO's give a nice chuckle and then look out their window for the rest for the flight thinking "Where can I access that no-fly with list?"

Who cares?

wow, i have yet to have the privilege of flying with the fountain of aviation truth!!!

I think people use this type of phraseology to perhaps... lighten the mood, have some fun and not sound like a robot all the time?? If you know the controller who works jax center and you say, any chance direct omn???? "ok thanks, cleared direct OMN".... not bad technique, just more of a personal touch.

Having said that, I dont say "checking in" or " with ya", but who really cares if someone does?? I would let THE FOs talk on the radio the way that works for them.

You know....I used to think people from the south talked funny and said some pretty stupid stuff. Same thing with all those crazy tongued people in the Boston area. After I got over myself I realized that not everyone is just like me and that I am not necessarily right. Just because you talk like you have a pole up your a$$ doesn't make you right.

btw: There is a reason why your FO's never thought of it....its because it is so petty that it doesn't deserve dedication of a single brain cell. Meanwhile they are dedicating a significant number of brain cells to devising a way of never having to fly with you again because you are a F'in lunatic!
