If Age 65 goes forward, how will that affect CAL's hiring or retirements?

The thread included about the possible rapid upgrades and growth of both airlines and how they may impact the future decision making of where to work and how secure it can be based on retirements numbers only. I'd say go look at other stuff really, good day.

Then there is the QOL issue. Most pilots now fly 90 hours with only 12 days off per month. The ability to trip trade is severely limited since we are always below min reserve coverage. This the result of PBS, which has killed our industry/ way of life.

MOST pilots? I don't think so. There are plenty of junior people getting 12 days off, I've also seen new hires with 15-16. I get 16-18 days off every month, but then again I bid at around 45% in my base. But I think "MOST" is a mischaracterization.

I can't argue with the trip trading though. It's horrendous. They have no business slowing down hiring this summer. But they will because they can.

All I can say is that I've signed up for a P2P class and I'm going to do my part to make things better around here.

If the rule was to change today that would be 1196 pilots that wouldnt retire for 5 years. Assuming most of them are captains I would think that means stagnation.

Just because they can, dosent mean they will. I think many of them will chose to retire at 60. One of the big things affecting that is the B plan. We still have it and as it was stated in an earlier post, people staying on after 60 will start to loss money. I really dont think there will be much of an impact overall. Initially, yes. We as pilots have a terrible tendancy to look short term. CAL is a strong company and getting stronger. The contract definitely needs to be improved but there is a lot more leverage to do something about with the company making money. Lots of smoke and mirrors and typical upcoming contract negotiation positioning.

Bottom line, you'd be a fool to turn down CAL.

On the topic of PBS. There is a definite learning curve with it and there are some definite bugs that need to be worked out. I've talked to a lot of guys about it and the most common response is "To get what you want, you can't think like a pilot" meaning you have to be realistic about what parameters you set and really know how to use the system. Senority dosen't hurt either.

Another thing to factor in is that although there will be a bunch who hang on after 60, I think most have no intention of staying all the way to 65. I've seen a bunch who I have doubts about making it to 60. Yes, the 65 change would have an impact, but I don't think it'll be as severe as many expect.

You're not the first to call me a fool for my decision. But I'd argue that only a fool would fly for a major airline that has a worse contract than their regional affiliate, and especially a fool to work for a major airline where you must go without health benefits for you and your family for half a year.

Have fun with all that for the next four to five years. I'll stay at XJT until I get a better job than CAL.

Argue all you want. You're still a putz for staying at a regional.

CAL doesn't have a good contract. But we have the best scope clause in the industry, and we can work on the rest.

Are you curious how Colgans new Q400's are going to effect your operation up there? I've heard that CAL management would like nothing more then to get rid of the replacement jets that are in EWR.

By the way, I've got great health care for my family. You just have to do a little research.

One last thing, I'll have lots of fun over the next four or five years and even more fun when your pulling gear for me one day.

I dont think the age 60-65 thing will be as dramatic as people think it will be. Of the 250 guys (approx) who will retire next year I bet half will leave no matter what. I have talking about it with some of the 55+ guys Ive been flying with and I get a even mix of guys who will leave at 60 vs. guys who would like an extra year or so vs. guys who will fly until someone drags them out of the cockpit. Most of the latter category have 12 ex-wives or have some awful financial planning skills.
You also have to considder the rate of pilots having medical issues will increase after age 60.

CAL is getting 30 new 737s next year... They were planning on parking 15 of the -300s but in the last few weeks rumors have been flying around that we are keeping all or most of those airplanes. If CAL staffs 7 bodies per seat (14 per plane) that is 420 new bodies next year before retirements! It will be a minimum of 210 if they park the 15 300s.

So the way I see it is that even if AGE 60 changes on Jan 1 CAL will still have to minimally hire 210 guys next year.

I don't want to stay at ExpressJet forever, but I do not want to work at CAL anymore either. As other airlines begin to hire, I bet you will see many pilots passing on the 'opportunity' to work at CAL.

It's unlikely that I will be yanking your gear, since I won't be at CAL.

If the age 60 rule changes this week or next, I doubt you will be in the left seat anytime soon.

Also, there's always that UAL merger rumor to think about.

Why are CAL new hires quitting again? I think I will save myself the grief of having to quit from there when a real airline calls me.

Obviously you're just a flamebaiting homo, since most if not all of your posts involve hammering off about how much CAL sucks.

Stay at XJT. You're doing the right thing.

So now I am a 'moron', a 'putz' and a 'flamebaiting homo' just because I don't want to work at CAL?

No, mainly it is because of the horid CAL contract.

So if it is so great, why are pilots quitting?

I never said it was great, but if you can't see the future beyond the end of your nose, you deserve everything you'll never have. Only a jerkoff would stay at a place where career advancement is limited by someone else.

Which brings me to the two things we have here that you don't have there: Scope and a 12.75% b fund.

And I don't believe your story anyway. I think the gratification you seek would be more easily found if you spanked it to internet porn. So get busy with that.

To Recap:

Moron
Putz
Flamebaiting homo
jerkoff

Ha, I make more as an ExpressJet CA than you do as a CAL FO. Also, maybe I cannot predict the future, but I do see a future at CAL as being very bleak.

Low pay, no insurance (even WalMart pays insurance), horrible schedules with PBS, no chance at upgrading when the age 65 is passed next week, and then a merger with United where CAL pilots will be screwed. Have fun with all that zonker. You will be living with that contract for 5 more years! Yah baby!

No thanks.
