Sorry guys, I just have to vent here.

To all regional pilots: TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR APPEARANCE!!!!!

This isn't about hat or no hat, backpacks, iPods, or frosted hair.

This is about wearing your tie when walking around the terminal. This is about not walking around faded dockers. For god sakes do not wear a worn out red baseball cap around the terminal while weraing the rest of the full uniform (saw that last week - looked very professional from the neck down - looked like a hung-over frat guy from the neck up). Female pilots - please don't wear hot pants and walk around the terminal yelling into your cell phone about what a b---- someone else is.

Thank you for your time. Now back to our regularly scheduled flaming.

Lemme guess...you saw all that in the PHL F Concourse during one 2-hour productivity break?

PS - I agree with you...

I dress very professinally. but when my stuff starts to wear out, i can almost guarantee you i am going to get the dockers or just wear ratty stuff. Mostly on principle. My company expects me to wear a specific brand and style that is very expensive. they pay me a crappy salary and on top of that expect me to pay for my own uniform. The first time around i had to shell out 10% of my take home pay for 6 MONTHS!!!:angryfire

Rant over

Actually I think most of the pilots going through the F concourse do a pretty good job. I would say where I saw much of this, but I don't want to be accused of bashing any specific company - as fun as it may be some times.

Yes, whining on Flightinfo. That'll take care of the problem

Have you confronted your fellow pilots directly?

I have to agree if you want to get the respect and pay of a professional pilot then you have to dress like a professional. When was the last time you saw somebody from a legacy carrier dress as unprofessional as some regional pilots do.

TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR APPEARANCE!

I strongly agree with this. I know how tough it is in this job: I spent my entire first year payroll-deducting my uniform, and that was for the bare-butt minimums since I came over from another airline. The thing is, when people see an ill-presented pilot in the terminal, they won't necessarily know that he's broke, but they will know for sure that he looks like a slob.

Just my opinion; the worse you look, the better I look. :D

Hell I once saw an American AIRLINES Captain struttn around in worn out black reeboks along with his potbelly and shirtail hanging out of his 4 inch too short flood pants and his hat looked like he used it as a woopie cushion for 25 years.

The mainline slobs are out there.

I can't stand the putzes that look so ridiculous either. However in some select cases, the hot pants look REALLY nice!

I don't think it's a big deal at all, but what I find funny is that at my airline, we have NO uniform police and quite frankly I think that management could care less how we dress. Check that, they did request if guys have a ponytail, the rubber band holding it in back should be of a neutral color.

Totally agreed with everything you just posted except for the hot pants remark...........

The red hat is a bit much. However I am not shining my shoes, buying new pants, ties or shirts until I get a contract. :p

Wasn't making an excuse, mearly stating a basic point you get what pay for.

If you wan't fresh dry cleaned, starched uniforms, the best luggage, and the overall best professional attitudes, my personal belief is that the level of professionalism is worth a hell of alot more then $300-$400 dollars a week.

I've heard at other companies managament has sent out memos telling pilots that they were not to dress up in their uniforms on their days off and go to the welfare office.

I'm not making an excuse in saying that pilots should be lazy and neglect their flight duties in anyway, but most pilots do take pride in their work.
So if they can't afford the $300 luggage, stock their wardrobe with 20 uniforms, and might, on the off chance, wear the same uniform 2 or 3 days in a row, I for one can understand that.

Can't pay for dry cleaning if you're struggling just to pay the rent or put food on the table. Certainly can't buy new uniform items if living within poverty guidelines. Not an excuse. Fiscal reality.

Its the chicken and the egg philosophy:

You'll dress more when you're paid more

-or-

You'll be paid like a professional when you dress and act like one.

Mr. Schmo subscribes to #1, while I believe in #2.

So what you are saying is that you have 1500 hours, and dress like a slob, and use terms like "Semenhole" to describe your previous experience in aviation.

So I guess they did get what they paid for.;)

Okay, I've never seen a female pilot in hot pants, but I really don't think that you should be dissuading this behavior on a public forum. If a hot female pilot wants to express herself, who are you to criticize? You do want them to express themselves, don't you? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Couldn't agree more. If a company sees unprofessional dress and/or behavior amongst the paying public, what incentive do they have to pay more come contract renewal time? Does anyone actually believe that could be used as leverage? However, it all boils down to personal respect. If you dress like a slob, you should expect to be thought of as one and treated like one. The unfortunate bi-product of this is that you are a direct reflection of your company.

The problem isn't the hot female pilot in hotpants (not that I've ever seen one); the problem is that hotpants belong on hot females. Ergo, they have no place on female pilots. :D

*running for cover*

I don't think management really cares how you dress in regards to contract negotiations and what they are willing to pay you. Sure apperance does reflect on the company, but professionalism is more than dressing nice. Reminds me of the saying you get what you pay for.

Thanks thats the freakin point I was trying to make.

Guys, have you really taken a look at most female pilots? There are a few good looking ones out there, but they are few and far between. Funny thing is the good looking ones are dressed the best (most professional). The ones in the quasi hot pants are usually not much to look at.

Perhaps I am weird (okay there is no perhaps about it), but I have never been one for the trashy look on women, no matter how hot they may be. A classy look is what I like.

And remember the rule, folks: Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

...Unfortunately, M&H won't send me a United uniform without a valid file number.

I couldn't help but rub my eyes when I saw a great looking pair of hot pants on a Dash driver in CLT last week. I know the "hot chick pilot" is kinda like the legend of bigfoot, but I swear I saw her!

I don't think this has any bearing on pilot pay negotiations. I believe it is more supply of labor and demand for it. Come contract time, if their is high demand of pilot labor and a low supply of it the pilots will have leverage. How they dress doesn't matter too much as long as it is the uniform.
