I disagree! I had a GREAT time with the professors at Embry-Riddle (in daytona beach). Majored in Aeronautical Science with a minor in weather. Some of the professors at Riddle were ex military (cant go wrong with that) and their weather department was great too!

Now the flight school on the other hand, that's a different story.... I will bet that the same problems are STILL there when I was there from '96 on.

But one of the MANY things my father has taught me was this. A diamond will shine, wherever it is polished. Meaning doesn't matter if you go to Harvard or your local community college. What counts is the diploma in your hand saying you have a 4 year degree!

I agree, within this industry. The 4yr degree really doesn't matter where it was from. However outside of aviation a degree from a "good" school can often open doors. I saw this first hand when I was an engineer. I'm not saying that I agree with it, just what I saw. If I were the boss I'd rather hire a an engineer with a degree from some podunk school that loves engineering rather than someone from MIT or CALtec that has good grades but little love for engineering and is just planing on being an engineer for a few year till they go to grad school.

Yet another reason why UND is great.......you get the real college experience as I'm sure you get it at Auburn. No good football at UND though, it's all about the Hockey! Now if there was a way to get USC to have an aviation program, that would be awesome.

at face value, it sure read like you were slinging mud- whether you meant to or not.

I know nothing about anything at VQQ; but that was one of the deceased I mentioned, yes. There are a billion close calls every single day, Tram. One close call too many and you get yourself perished- nobody is immune and no flight school can prevent it from happening. You got my hackles raised again though, by bringing up something that sorta happened at someplace once where he replicated an unclear thing with a student or something, and then you used his name.

Not cool.

Don't get me wrong- I very nearly went off like a pound of TNT on him more than once for many reasons, none of which matter now. We didn't get along very well at ALL! I have a dozen "stories" about every one of the guys that are no longer with us, to boot. However, we're implicated quickly enough in the dumbed-down jury of the pubic at large; those of us that should know better ought to just realize a son/father/brother/cousin/etc is dead, and "but for the grace of God go I."

Think I'm full of duke? Imagine smacking the ground in a 402 after the spar goes *tweak* and you die. Then somebody that flew with you once, very early on, mentions to the newspaper that you could barely talk on the mic and fly at the same time. Or you started the engine(s) with the plane tied/chocked. Or you cranked one once doing a repo from the farm with the mags off. Or you fell victim to the silly prank of a pulled IGN CB when you're doing the sequence, and the other guy pushes it back in... *FOOM*. Or that time you left the master on. There was no reason for that BS to be mentioned in the wake of THAT pilot's demise by anyone, because not a bit of it mattered to the NTSB. If they find gross negligence in the Coney Island crash and find past instances that are relevant, THEN it's time to talk and hopefully learn.

turns out, though, that if i keep training expeditiously, like i did on this first rating, i'll come in well under the $40,000 mark for PPL-MEI, and i'll be flying 2001 or better 172's (and a craaaaaaaaptacular duchess).

If you plan to combine with college I recommend San Jose State in CA. I didn't attend SJSU myself but their graduates have impressed me. Seems like a great program that is reasonably priced.

Go to Mexico! Its cheap there! You'll learn lots of night flying and how to land on dirt strips at 3am. Its great! Sometimes they pay you!

There hasn't been a really bad dig on us yet on this post, but so many people badmouth us grads. What did we do besides go to a good flight school?

When I tell people I went to riddle, its like dropping the "riddle bomb."

Good flight training, met some good friends, but the lady situation was lackluster in prescott. I havent been back since and they are out of their mind if they think I'm going to donate any money EVER!!! HA.

Overall academically I would have to say Embry-Riddle however it has become way way too expensive. The flight training is top notch they prepare you to be an airline pilot while others are only out to get your money. If you go to riddle you will definitely be prepared to be an airline pilot. But don;t get me wrong there are pilot factories out there that will get you in the right seat without a four year and with less than 1000tt. Weight the options

i was getting gas yesterday and this old beater pulled up to the pump next to mine. out steps a young man wearing a short-sleeved oxford with epulettes (is that spelled right? tonyc, help me out here, man!) on his shoulders. he must not have been an instructor for very long b/c he only had 2 stripes per shoulder. you riddle kids, what does each stripe signify? the year you are in college or what?

Wow riddle really has some dorks... When people are talking about the college experience they don't mean the GREAT time you had with professors... They are referring to the drunken orgy interupted by classes. Foam parties, keg stands, good clean sex, dirty raunchy sex, the 2AM pizza run, Tailgating, I'm sure I'm forgetting tons...

Went to UND wouldn't recommend it.... The job placement is garbage. Pick a school by job placement my roomate was in my groundschool 21 years old and 660 hours.

I find it funny that virtually ever guy/gal suggesting Riddle has the worst grammar on the planet (well maybe this board, and it's just an observation.) Oh yeah more to the point of the post, I did get a 4 year aviation degree, but wish I did something else. Go fly at an FBO, or better yet get your ratings from a 141 school, still eligible for financial aid that way.

Mesa Airlines has a flight school called the San Juan program. The students learn to fly in A-36 Bonanzas and B-58 Barons. The flight school is a tough program but those who make it through get a guaranteed interview; and most former students get hired into a DHC-8 or CRJ at around 300 hrs. This is a two year program. There is also a flight program associated with ASU, flying the same equipment. It depends if you want a 4 year or 2 year degree. If you already have a degree, then the San Juan program (in Farmington New Mexico) would be a better choice. Not to many flight schools can put you in the right seat with a degree in under three years. Go to mesa-air.com

This is by far the BEST way to go. No i didn't go this way but if I had I would have been a SWA CA by the age 27 at the LATEST!!!!

The name of the game if you want to be a airline pilot is to get PIC turbine ASAP! Get the ratings QUICK and get on with a crappy company that will have lots of turnover! Do not go to the cushy regional/national type jobs like Comair/Horizon/Skywest....those jobs are too good and you will not upgrade quick enough. In the long run, a little pain at a crappy regional that flies safe equipment will be an investment in long term earning potential. You do not want to be a 5 year FO in a CRJ....that is worthless today!

This program at MESA has all of that from what I gather...no need to look any further. Yes...you will hear A LOT of Mesa bashing around the industry....but the MESA guys are laughing their way into the right seat of SWA, UPS, FEDEX, JETBLUE with their PIC Turbine and very little SIC Turbine....their counterparts continue to wait for the upgrade at their respective airlines!

Riddle Bomb..........I think what you see comes from the pompous attitude that many of your alumni portray. Flown with peeps from just about every flight school out there. Riddle is no better or worse than any of the others, The only down side is the attitude that the riddle guy/gals put out there. In the cockpit of an airplane nobody gives a fat rats rear where you learned to fly....they only look at the final product, and in that department, riddle does not stand out one way or the other.
