Our company implemented a policy where if you refuse a junior assignment it's an automatic MT (like everyone else I'm sure)with a review to possibly be changed on a case by case basis. Worst example was when I was in a holding area waiting out a LVL 5 and on hold with dispatch trying to work out a re-route. My call waiting beeped and I answered and it was sked informing that I was jm'd for day 6 the next day. First time I cursed and was caught on tape. CP had a good laugh after I explained the situation but my F/O had to be a 'character witness'. Thanks George. By the way it was more like senior-manning cuz I was called wayyyyy out of seniority order.

Yep,

Junior manning can stink. You can sit a home for days off and bored out of your mind, but the first time you actually have something planned, you can bet they'll tag you.

First thing is to remeber is to invest in a neato service called signal ring. They give you an extra phone number (goes to the same line), but when someone calls it, it makes the phone ring a bit differently. Works great, and they while they might have caller ID blocked, scheduling CAN'T dodge the signal ring because it's a real phone number.

On the cell, don't answer if you don't know the number...BUT if you are at work, they gotcha anyway.

At PDT back in the day, they had a computerized sign-in/out thing you had to use. You couldn't just bolt for the door at block-in. Other tricks they would use is refusing to release the airplane on the last leg until you called.

Me,too! :) Although I think it's pretty sad that some will go so far to say "I'm drunk" to scheduling just to dodge the assignment. We already have a pretty "sheety"reputation in that regard with the traveling public . No need to perpetrate that myth amongst our co-workers ,too. You don't want to fly on your days off, there are better ways to do it than that. We had one scheduler when I was at PDT long ago , accuse the Captain of having a "drinking problem" (her exact words) and bought her concerns to the Chief Pilot. You can imagine the ruckus that caused! I really hope that those that have posted on this web board that they tell scheduling that they are drunk,or "I just had a beer" when they are trying to contact you at 9:30 in the morning really did'nt are just blowing off steam and trying to be "cute". And for those of you who do pull that stunt,or are thinking of doing so in the future, know that in today's hostile pilot work enviroment you are walking a very thin line.

.....On a lighter note... this occured to me while I was a Dash 8 Capt with PDT
in the "good ol' days" when Jr Manning were literally out of control,as it always seemed to be back then. It's my day off ,the phone rings, my wife picks it up with me standing by her side:

PDT Scheduling: " Hello this is XXXXX from PDT Scheduling. Is Capt XXXX there?

My Wife: (with a slight hint of exasperation in her voice) "No he isn't...but do me a favor. If you find the Son of a Beach before I do,tell him to call home because ,boy is HE in trouble!!! "

....and with that my wife said the line went COMPLETLY dead..no response no nothing..just a click as the scheduled slinked away and quietly hung up the phone. We both we're dam near in tears from laughing so hard!! Who said this job isn't fun?:D

I just keep an open beer around!

"Work? I'm drunk as a skunk right now! It'll be days before I recover!"

A trip?? Ok but you'll have to send me a cab, I'm too drunk to drive!

You could say, "I'm not legal to fly due to recent alcohol consumption." They can't tell what to do while you're off. Also, just because an emplyoee accuses you of being an alcoholic doesn't make it true. Also, without evidence, anyone telling the CP you're a drunk/alcoholic is about to have a wet dream involving lawyers and a judge. I'd sue the pants off someone that doesn't even know me telling the CP I've got a drinking problem b/c I said I've just been drinking or am drunk.

OK by me if you want to risk your career flying the mighty PA44 by shooting off your yap:rolleyes: , but if this landed up in court, and with anti-pilot sentiment out there
being what it is, I don't know if it's worth taking that risk, especially if you weren't drinking in the first place. I mean, all just to avoid a JA assignment?

Here's the problem with the 'just had a beer' scenario:

Sked: 'OK, we're junior manning for tomorrow too. Go ahead and stop drinking now, and I'll show your report time as now + 12 hrs.'

We have a jr manning cap at PDT. Once you have had 3 on a day off and 1 extention of more than 4 hrs you can't be jr manned by our contract. One year after I was capped Sked called at 430am, I had this converation with sked

Sked: We need to jr mann you for a 530 report.
Me: You can't possibly afford me this early in the morning. Click

Also had a new sked ask me if I would like a JR Mann. I anwered "No Thanks, Click"

Yeah, the cap you guys have today was a direct result of the unlimited amount of JA'ing they we're allowed to do back in the early 90's. We put a stop to that in the next contract. Do you guys still have that check in/check out computer system?

sabre?

Are you talking about sabre? Thats what were using to check in/out....I think the hardest part when I was going through ground school/SOE was figuring out how to sign in/out and do whatever with all the codes required. What do yall use at other carriers? Or do you even have to check in/out yourself? Enlighten me

We have this at colgan air, it is called "drafting" though. No premium pay. You have been "drafted".
Do you have to pay them to fly the junior manning, or is it only a one time fee for training up front?

1. Get a second number.

2. Give it to scheduling.

3. Have the new number call forward back to scheduling.

No problem!

Heyas all,

Of course, the problem with most regionals and some majors is that schedulers keep a "$hit list".

While certainly not official, if you are a jacka$$ too many times, they know who you are. Given a situation that could either break in your favor or not, you can bet you will get the crappy side.

Best thing is to keep a low profile. Signal ring or caller ID. Don't talk to scheduling at all if it can be avoided.
